  • Resumen Espectáculo
  • This research sought to map the constituent forces of what would become the Brazilian "libertarian movement". We propose "libertarian" as a hyperonym with an analytical function, encompassing the systematizations of the Austrian School of Economics (EAE) and its "libertarian" and "anarcho-capitalist" consequences. To this end, we provide a brief summary of the main authors of the EAE and its consequences in the political field, including the constitution of the American "libertarian" movement. The EAE can be categorized as the most radicalized strand of ultra-liberalism, and its insertion in the Brazilian context is driven by the work of think tanks and right-wing intellectuals in the context of the slow and gradual process of re-democratization. In this sense, we focus on the work of the businessman Henry Maksoud, recognized by the libertarian circle as "the first Brazilian libertarian", the Liberal Institute and the Institute of Business Studies. From the 2000s, we identify the first appearances proclaimed as "libertarian" and/or "anarcho-capitalist", through the blogs "O Indivíduo" and "Austríaco", which are even cited by libertarian agents in memory of the "first contact with libertarian doctrine". The link with the right has the reciprocal influence of Olavo de Carvalho, who is treated as the ideologue responsible for denouncing the cultural war waged daily against the "leftist hegemony".

  • Resumen Espectáculo
  • The presence of human groups among the municipalities of Lavras, Perdões, and Ijaci, Minas Gerais, in the precolonial past extends along the banks of the Grande River and its tributaries: the Mortes River and Capivari River. This occupation is the main focus of the present research. Based on the remaining materialities of archaeological sites, particularly the Monte Alegre and Palmital sites, the aim is to develop an analysis that seeks a greater understanding of the occupation and presence of indigenous groups in the surrounding areas of the rivers in the region. Through the analysis of the sites and their associated elements, such as ceramic fragments, lithics, and others, the processes and nature of Amerindian presence are discussed, as well as the indigenous history of the locality, which has been significantly lacking in information until now.

  • Resumen Espectáculo
  • We intend, through this research, to study the representation of the Russian colonization of Siberia, made by the Englishman William Coxe. The author was an important member of English high society at the end of the 18th century. He wrote and published the book “Account of the Russian Discoveries Between Asia and America”, in the late 1780s. In this work are found several trends of the Scottish Enlightenment, an intellectual and literary movement of the time. This movement perpetuated various economic and cultural notions that epistemologically justified European colonialism and imperialism. It is, in short, a study through the work “Report of the Russian Discoveries Between Asia and America” of how the Enlightenment approached and justified the territorial expansion of European countries, mainly the British Empire, during the 18th century.

  • This research aims to verify the cases of violence against women, in the procedural collection of the LABDOC, in the Comarca de Oliveira, Minas Gerais, in the period between 1830 and 1850. From our investigation, we were able to verify how the cases occurred of violence against women, how the disputes were registered in the criminal procedural documents and how was the posture of the Judiciary, recently implanted in the nineteenth century society. Throughout our research, we could see how much male violence interfered in social and power relations between people, also highlighting how the female figure was neglected by society and historiography.

  • This work aims to analyze the sociopolitical and cultural content explored by the chronicles of Fred Melo Paiva, for the column “Da Arquibancada'' in the newspaper Estado de Minas, between the years 2011 and 2019. Analysis of the 350 chronicles published over that period. Subsequently, we cataloged the chronicles through the categorization of their themes. By addressing in his chronicles the themes that relate the universe of football to politics, the chronicler in question outlines criticisms of the current political moment, mainly governments and conservative morals, in order to mark his progressive position. The narratives mobilize descriptions of events related to the soccer metier, relating them to political agendas and social issues that permeate Brazilian daily life. We present this study in two chapters: it addresses “athleticism” or the identity of Clube Atlético Mineiro supporters, through the use of various figures of speech that make up Fred Melo Paiva's rhetoric. In the second chapter, we analyze themes related to institutional politics that set the tone of football chronicles. Through the analysis of the chronicles, we realized to what extent the identity profile of the chronicler – athletic and progressive – leaves marks on his textual production and instigates the debate of social and political themes.

This work aims to analyse the material culture of the slaveholding elite of the term of Baependi  in the first half of the 19th century, based on the description of the goods contained in the inventories collected during that period. Material culture is still a field of study that can be further explored by historiography. Although the material aspects of society have had space in national and international history publications, the problematization and discussion about the meaning of material culture is often left out of the questions raised by the authors. Therefore, new contributions to the area of research are necessary in order to encourage debate and the conceptualization of the term. The chosen period will allow us to understand how the socio-political and economic transformations of the first five decades of the 19th century were able to promote changes in the habits and customs of the colonial elites, demonstrated through new forms of consumption, such as luxurious objects and ostentation, described in the inventories. For this, require a thorough analysis of the inventories through qualitative methodology methods, typical of micro-history, highlighting the social, economic and cultural aspects of the society being researched.

  • The present work proposes to approach the reaction of the Catholic clergy to the advance of Pentecostalism in the city of Campanha - MG in the 1950s, through the newspaper Voz Diocesana, official information vehicle of the diocese created in the city in 1907. The periodical that, as in his words initials, “the aim was to establish bonds of union between the episcopal city and the parishes, between the diocesan assistant and the parish organizations, communicating news about the progress of their activities”; was used as an instrument to combat the newly arrived Protestantism in the city, when the Assembly of God was created in 1954. The association held by the Catholic Church takes advantage of the political condition of the United States and Latin American countries in the context of the Cold War – who fight communism - and compares the American missionaries to the red bloc, as a way of containing the denomination's advance. For this investigation, a qualitative analysis was carried out from printed sources of the periodical, allowing to perceive signs of religious intolerance.

  • Resumen Espectáculo
  • This study investigates the influence of Central African cosmovisions on the formation process of the Ketu Nago candomblé in the Southeast of Brazil, from its foundation in the twentieth century to its transformations in the dynamics between tradition and modernity in the twenty-first century. Here we intend to historically recover the social and academic-theoretical factors that led to the prestige and visibility of religious manifestations of Sudanese origin, that is, Nago, to the detriment and invisibilization of practices originating from the Bantu, or Central African, ethnolinguistic complex. Contrary to what has been established as praxis in the analysis of such manifestations, this research is based on the inversion of the concept of Nagoization of candomblé angola, rethinking the liturgical bases that founded and institutionalized the Nago religion, and shedding light to the process here called Bantuization of religious practices coming from West Africa. The research analyzes other related aspects, such as the concept of syncretism, recent historical perspectives on black popular Catholicism in Brazil, and the various processes of reafricanization of terreiros, debates that are inseparable from the investigation proposed here. To this end, this study was based on observation through monitoring public and private ceremonies of candomblé terreiros, as well as Oral History interviews with leaders of four houses, one in each state of the Southeast.

  • Resumen Espectáculo
  • This masters dissertation consists of a comprehensive analysis of the fountain and its
allegory l’Été — O Verão (the summer), installed in São João del-Rei in 1888. Traditionally
known as Chafariz da deusa Ceres (the fountain of the goddess Ceres), this urban furniture was
produced by the Fonderies du Val d’Osne during the 19th century and represents a combination
of aesthetic and functional aspects resulting from the alliance between the arts and the
foundry industries. Termed fonte d’art, this expression was adopted to refer to artistic cast iron
pieces, defining both the material used and the technique employed, as well as the urban
equipment that characterized decorative products produced in series throughout the 19th
century. Its installation by the City Council in 1888 was a response to urban transformations
and the need to provide a regular service of potable water supply. Among the works
undertaken by the municipality, the capture of potable water was among the main priorities,
primarily due to the concepts of hygiene, civility, and progress that prevailed in the discourses
of a period of rapid urban and demographic growth. After the demolition of the fountains
from the colonial and imperial periods, this furniture and its identified counterparts
represented the influence of the Belle Époque modernity and the desire to build the image of
a modern and civilized city. Thus, based on the iconographic and iconological analysis of the
fountain and its materiality, It seeks to understand how political, economic and sociocultural
factors favored its installation, as well as the models of inspiration, style, composition and
materials used. This research aims to substantiate, through public history and Art History,
the value of this fountain as heritage in the public space and to reflect on the relationship of
this 'modern' cast iron furniture from the 19th century with São João del-Rei in the 21st
    century.

  • Resumen Espectáculo
  • The main objective of this dissertation was to analyze the narrative of the superseries “Os dias Eram assim”, a production of TV Globo network from 2017. Set in the city of Rio de Janeiro between 1970 and 1985, the plot explores the context of the Brazilian dictatorial regime, in particular the "years of lead" and the subsequent process of political opening. The narrative focuses on the love story between Alice Sampaio (Sophie Charlotte) and Renato Reis (Renato Góes), whose romance is hampered by the political events of that period of history. The research was conducted based on the methodological approach proposed by Jérôme Bourdon. In the analysis, three prominent elements were identified: (i) the extensive inclusion of image files of the broadcaster's television journalism gives the work elements that promote authenticity, the documentary character and, mainly, a sense of witness to the events of the period; (ii) the character Natália Andrade (Mariana Lima), a History teacher, was used in the narrative as a symbol of resistance, being tortured and elected deputy at the end of the plot. Thus, the teacher's life was influenced by the political events of that context, raising reflections on the contemporary nature of the work, with emphasis on the “National Truth Commission” and the issue of the “School Movement Without Party”. In this sense, a connection was identified between the representation of the dictatorial past and the context of the superseries' exhibition; (iii) the narrative emphasizes the involvement of civil society in the repressive apparatus and its financing during the military dictatorship, with emphasis on the role of the construction industry and the use of the term "civil-military dictatorship". Finally, in contextual terms, the analysis focused on the reception of a "Bolsonarista" inclination on Twitter, driven by Eduardo Bolsonaro's call for his followers to create counter-narratives in response to the plot using the hashtag "#osdiasnaoeramassim," promoting what Napolitano (2021) called “ideological revisionism”. Furthermore, these reactions align with the vision of Stuart Hall, who conceives of culture as a field of symbolic struggle, where different groups compete for the definition of cultural meanings and representations. In this context, a space of memory disputes is evident, in which both TV Globo Network and the "bolsonaristas" resort to the dictatorial past, using it to promote their agendas in the contemporary times in which the plot was displayed.

  • This present work aims to investigate the teaching of History within the Brazilian Military Academy Based mainly on two main sources – the analysis of a book used as a aid material for “Brazilian military history” classes entitled “Introduction to Brazilian Military History” and a series of “final papers”produced by cadets in training – here we will delve deeper into the study of historical narratives present within the Military Academy. Knowing the impact that narratives of this type have in our social and cultural life and understanding the vitality of the meanings produced by them for the study of the formation of a common military imaginary and for the identity formation of cadets, the intention is to understand how such narratives influence in the preparation of Brazilian military officership.Furthermore, based on the understanding that the Brazilian Military Academy  constructs certain representative signs in order to reintroduce the past in the present, we seek to observe how the cadets affected by these representations appropriated them and re-signified them. Understanding the education offered in this space as predominantly banking, the aim is to investigate how this antidialogical practice affected the cadets, the formulation of their work and what the possible consequences are for the production of knowledge within the Military Academy.

  • Resumen Espectáculo
  • The present work has as its main object of study the academic contributions of the professor and sociologist Jessé Souza, as well as his critical theory produced in order to demystify the dominant ideas of Brazilian social thinking, especially those produced in the 1930s by Gilberto Freyre and Sérgio Buarque de Holanda, and later continued and expanded to intellectuals such as Raymundo Faoro, Roberto DaMatta, among others. The objective is to analyze how Souza identifies the existence of a conservative science and a historiographical tradition in the Brazilian intellectuality, both responsible for building a national identity supported by culturalism and patrimonialism, being that way at the service of a small financial elite. According to Souza, these totalizing ideas end up naturalizing inequalities and making the production and reproduction of a rabble of invisible sub-citizens, thus legitimizing a culture of coups d'état sponsored by the elites and the middle classes against radically transformative, inclusive and reformists political projects. Our intention is to examine the possible theoretical and/or methodological limits present in his analyses, which, according to the author, aim to build a new totalizing narrative about Brazilian society. Finally, we will investigate the causes and reasons raised by the sociologist that explain the recent rise of the extreme right wing in Brazil, as well as his theoretical contributions to building a new ideological architecture for the left wing in Brazil.

  • Resumen Espectáculo
  • The aim of this paper is to study the news about Cuba's independence process in
Gazeta de Minas, a newspaper founded in the municipality of Oliveira in Minas Gerais
in September 1887 by Antônio Fernal, particularly what is known in historiography as
the "second moment" of this political process, between 1895 and 1902. Gazeta's
discourses and representations in relation to the Cuban independence process are
analyzed based on the idea that newspapers were active elements that influenced
political, economic and social discussions in the region where they circulated.
Newspapers can be seen as a space for the circulation and reproduction of various
types of information, themes, attitudes and behaviors of societies and their local and
international environments. In this sense, periodicals were one of the first media that
allowed access to realities beyond those known on a daily basis. To develop our work,
we base our discussions on the concepts of "public sphere" and "sociabilities". Both
allow us to analyze how newspapers, through their circulation, generate social spaces
and how they become fundamental pieces in the structuring of political and cultural
    relations.

  •

This study aimed primarily to analyze the biographical writings of Alfredo Ellis Jr. (1896-1974), drawing upon two main sources: "Um parlamentar paulista da República: subsídios para a história da República em S. Paulo e subsídios para a história econômica de São Paulo" (1949) and "Tenente-Coronel Francisco da Cunha Bueno: pioneiro da cafeicultura no Oeste Paulista" (1960). The objective was to comprehend how the author's familial memory, as depicted in the paternal and grandfatherly biographies, is structured and engages in a construction of historical meaning grounded in "scientific" assumptions such as "racialism," geographical "determinism," and economic "determinism.". Furthermore, the biographical writings of the São Paulo historian in the years between 1950-1960 emerge as a fertile source for delineating continuities and reinterpretations developed by the author himself in comparison with his more studied productions as a historian between 1920-1930. Lastly, we can understand the reactualization of the defense of São Paulo regionalism following the "Era Vargas," particularly as the decentralizing regionalist project facilitated by the Partido Republicano Paulista unfolds during the First Republic. This is notably observed through Alfredo Ellis Jr.'s use of a resentful language in the paternal biographies as a means of compensating for dissatisfaction and losses from the author's perspective, concerning the beleaguered economic elite of São Paulo and the centralizing policies throughout the past and present of the nation.Parte superior do formulário

  • Studying the Arminian text, it is possible to infer that for the auyor predestination is conditional, that is, it implies believing in Christ. For that, grace authorizes the free will of man to act unconditionally. Arminius in this sense is thinking along the lines of tolerant theologians and writers who favor the control of civil authorities over religious life and against those who adhere to a rigid doctrine on predestination and favor the autonomy of the Church in relation to the State.

  • This research has as main objective to analyze the city of Divinópolis during the civil-military dictatorship. In this dissertation we aimed to highlight the resistance actions and repression episodes that took place in the city, which is located in the Midwest of Minas Gerais. The study used oral history as methodological perspective, being primordial the concepts of memory and resistance. The documental corpus of the research is composed of interviews with local residents that had some sort of involvement with the resistance movements. Still, as complementary sources, we searched newspapers editions that were around in Divinópolis between the years of 1964 and 1985 and we focused the analysis on the newspapers A Semana” and “Diário do Oeste”. Besides these, we made a brief survey in newspapers of other locations, like “Folha de São Paulo” and “Correio da Manhã”, in which we found information about events that occurred in Divinópolis. We analyzed documents from the Social and Political Order Department (DOPS) and from the National Service of Information (SNI) and finally, we also utilized photographs from the time. The study of the sources allowed us to observe that, although located in the inland, divinopolitan society was not oblivious to what happened in the national political context. Amid the support that the coup gathered in the city, also emerged various actions that can be framed in the resistance scope, as we will present during the text. Amid the support the coupe achieved in the town, there emerged many actions that fit as resistance acts, as the teachers' strikes, the discussions arranged by the Divinópolis' Women Union, the critical approach of the classes taught by Franciscans in the universities and in their sermon during the masses, the realization of the art week, the participation of divinopolitans in resistance groups, among others protests.

  • Resumen Espectáculo
  • This research presents the theoretical and practical analyses elaborated by the World March of Women in dialogue with the Sempreviva Feminist Organization, focusing on the production carried out during the covid-19 pandemic, between 2020 and 2021. There were presented reflections on the theory of reproduction, a picture of the reality of female employment in Brazil, as well as the historical trajectory of the World March of Women, explaining the reasons why this social movement defines itself as an anti-systemic feminist movement. Feminist economics is presented as the main theoretical tool used by the movement to address criticism of capitalism and propose alternatives in the face of what is called capital-life conflict, suggesting proposals based on the sustainability of life. This research was carried out from bibliographic sources produced by the movement, with the aim of understanding how militant practice and theoretical formulations were developed during the health crisis caused by the covid-19 pandemic.

  • This dissertation is a study about the process of formation of identities of the healers in the city of São João del-Rei (MG) and their main healing practices. By establishing the History of Present Time and Oral History as a basis, we seek to analyze through the memories and stories of the healers - in which I also include my maternal grandmother Ana de Jesus Rodrigues - their life trajectories. We seek to understand the influence of oral tradition in the transmission of this knowledge to the following generations. Based on the investigation of the practices of blessings, we seek to comprehend the religious experience, the meanings as well as the representations that permeate the healing of the blesser’s craft. The study also discusses the future perspective of these healers and the challenges to continue the practice of blessing.

  • Resumen Espectáculo
  • Due to the SARS-COV-2 pandemic, one of the most devastating in the history of mankind, 2020 became one of the most emblematic years in the last centuries. Radical changes in lifestyle and social interactions have substantially reshaped human relations in its various dimensions. In the matter of education, distance learning was the expedient used all over the world to allow children, adolescents and adults to carry on with their studies. Public schools in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais have launched a distant learning program called Programa de Estudos Tutorados (PET) so that students could go on with their school activities. In the city of São Paulo, public schools have responded to the pandemic with the program Programa Trilhas de Aprendizagem, a series of teaching materials the students have used for distance learning. This thesis analyses the production contexts of both teaching materials, taking into account the pandemic-imposed social distancing and its consequences, the visual aids used in the materials, and the simplified treatment given to study topics, which points to a deterioration of pedagogical institutions and processes. The study uses as measurement criteria the visual communication and the degree of simplification imposed on study topics, and compares the analysis results of both programs. Results have shown the respective accomplishments, difficulties and fragilities of these two teaching materials. The prevalence of simplified approaches to study topics, the low capacity of visual communication, and the insistence on repetition and memorization appear frequently in the analysis results and provide insights into the pedagogical work during the pandemic.

  • The present work proposes to map the interpretations of two Brazilian intellectuals, Lilia M. Schwarcz and Jessé Souza, about the rupture of the political project of class conciliation proposed by the Workers' Party (PT) from 2003 to 2016, which accommodated the interests of dominant sectors of society as well as implemented social policies that benefited the most poor. Both are social scientists with significant academic production, who are also involved in the public debate on the conjuncture of the period that goes from the June 2013 Manifestations until the impeachment of President Dilma Rousseff in 2016, when there was a rupture in the PT conciliation project which, among other things, resulted in the election of Jair Bolsonaro in 2018. We examine the works of Schwarcz and Souza before and after the impeachment of President Dilma Rousseff, with the purpose of reflecting on the participation of these social scientists in the dispute of interpretations of sociopolitical events in the country and also in their effort to speak to the general public.

  • This research has like main objective analyze the escape of slaves and their different motivations, strategies and possibilities as an integrant part of the daily life of the city of Rio de Janeiro in the first half of the 19 century. Through the analysis of seven thousand advertisement of runaway slaves published in the periodical “Diário do Rio de Janeiro”, we look to know the profile of the runaway slaves who lived in the city. The time span rangers from 1831, the year of the enactment of the Law of November 1831 which aimed to stop the importation of Africans into Brazil, until 1850, when the law was replaced by the law Eusebio de Queiroz, in which the slave trade was effectively extinguished. We direct our study to understand the behavior of the runaway slaves and the various insertion tactics used bay these historical actors at a crucial moment and theirs lives, the one that, at limit, would allow them to break or negotiate the condition of slaved. Beyond to using the advertisements written by slaves masters, we also made use of the Ministerial Justice Reports and the advertisement by the Rio de Janeiro police that involved escaped captives, reveling the various and complex strategies of slaves to resist. Therefore, this research seeks to discuss the analytical possibilities — for the universe of slavery in Brazil — that approaches the slavery, the press and the slave escapes.

  • Resumen Espectáculo
  • The study of football and literature is already common in research in the field of Social Sciences, and it is no different in History. Thus, through sports chronicles written by Roberto Drummond, during the 1978 and 1982 World Cups in Jornal Estado de Minas, we seek to relate these fields of study, understanding the conics produced by the author as part of a democratic political culture within the scope of national sports chronicle. We use the approach of the New Political History, in which the "politician" extrapolates the field of institutional power, also encompassing a series of practices and social representations, as is the case of football spectacle. In the first chapter, the chronicles were analyzed as sources of historical research, and the contextualization of Drummond’s intellectual biography was made. The second chapter is dedicated to the context of the Argentine dictatorship, host of the 1978 World Cup, and to Drummond's chronicles about the tournament. Finally, the third chapter presents the analysis of the chronicles of the 1982 World Cup. The comparison of sources shows that the author gives continuity to some recurring themes addressed by him in the previous World Cup. In summary, the set of analyzes suggests that the chronicles produced by Drummond reveal his popular style, full of colloquialities, with the idea that the Brazilian football team would represent the entire Brazilian people, through talent, creativity and genius that, in to a certain extent, it feeds the tradition left by chroniclers such as Mário Filho and Nelson Rodrigues.

  • Resumen Espectáculo
  • The presente work aims to explain a process of distinction between the philosopjical and theological domains through the discussion of the problem of the eternity of the world in Boethius of Dacia. Master of Arts at the University of Paris during the 13th century, Boethius was a readr of Aristotle and was commenting on a problem arising from Natural Philosophy, whose corpus arrived in Latin Christian Europe between the 12th and 13th centuries. Therefore it was necessary to understand the historicity of this philosophical discussion, foing through the concepts traditionally based on Christian Wisdom until the development of Aristotelism and the specialization of knowledge, analyzing how diferente philosophical concepts were received and reconfigured within the Christian culture, bringing together elements developed philosophically that formed a new intelectual understanding. Thus, the identity of “philosopher” was philosophically discussed by Boethius of Dacia, in order to legitimize his position within a predominantly creationist and theological culture.

  • The present work aims to understand and analyze the incentive that the government has given to spectacular football in Belo Horizonte since its emergence, in 1904, until 1950. Political relations with football are undeniable. The Belo Horizonte elite was enchanted by the sport and brought it closer to the public authorities. The use of the theoretical discussion on patrimonialism sheds light on the understanding of the relationships established between the interested groups and the perceived benefits to football clubs. For the analysis, documentation related to financial exchanges is used, as well as donations of land, leasing, improvement in stadium construction and discussions and renegotiation of the clubs' debts with the government.

The show, although fictional, referenced and represented the main events surrounding the investigations of Operation Car Wash and its aftermaths. The series portrays in its narrative the perception that corruption is Brazil’s greater problem, with Operation Car Wash being responsible for punishing those who committed this crime. In accordance with other media coverage, the show contributed to the construction of a mistrust imagery of parties and politicians involved in the corruption scandal, dichotomically delineating who were the heroes and the villains in national politics.

  •  It is intended to analyze the periodical produced by the students of Colégio Nossa Senhora das Dores, located in the city of São João del-Rei, having as time frame 1938-1947. We analyze the performance of these women in the press and in the city's public space. Catholic women, taught for activities of care and the domestic environment, motivated by Catholic Action, placed themselves in the public through a print, which, based on the traces originating in the text, circulated beyond the walls of the College. Ultimately, these women, inspired by a Marian ideal, place themselves as the one who teaches, even though they go beyond the limits of the domestic space. We realized that, for these women, the line that divides the public space from the domestic space is thin and in some situations it overlaps one another.

  • Resumen Espectáculo
  • This thesis presents a study on the Conservative Party of Minas Gerais in your relationship with the “Liga Progressista” during the period from 1860 to 1868. For such, this study is divided into three parts. At the first, I sought to analyze the Minas Gerais society structure and his circulation of goods and information, the ideological foundations of conservative opinions and principles, and how the doctrinaire press was used as a power en bloc. In the second part, I sought to discuss the relationship between conflicting political forces and identify political circuits from Minas Gerais and beyond. I found a disorganized Conservative Party and the effects of “Liga Progressista” politics in Minas Gerais. In the third part, I sought to understand the conflicts between the political forces and how this put pressure on the Minas Gerais Conservative Party and promoted its reorganization; lastly, I showed the repercussion of July 16’s ministerial reversal. Therefore, on the one hand, this research examines the organizative movement of the Conservative Party of Minas Gerais, which resulted from the antagonism between the political forces; on the other hand, this research aims to clarify that the struggles between the political forces reflected and developed the social conflicts of Minas Gerais, in the late 1850’s and throughout the 1860’s.

  • Resumen Espectáculo
  • This dissertation aimed to observe the presence of members of the clergy as participants in the imperial political dynamic, taking as a starting point the province of Minas Gerais between 1833 and 1837. The political priests of Minas were selected from their presence in the Provincial Assembly. Minas Gerais, but its presence was already well known even before the opening of the assembly. We seek to find their socioeconomic origins, their actions and their political tendencies. We have not forgotten their religious careers, which were naturally associated with the political career, and vice versa. The forms of action and insertion was one of the highlights, since for us the priests had a privileged space for political action within the society of that period, not only for their functions as a member of the electoral tables, but also as an important reference to the people who still listened to the priest's sayings. After being elected, we sought to observe their performance as representatives and tried to present their political tendencies, which at that time were beginning to assert themselves more clearly, taking into account issues that addressed priests and institutions between power struggles.

  • This paper aims to analyze aspects related to the collective memory of slavery, the implication of official certifications on the formation of quilombola identity and the importance of land as a symbolic space for the communities of remaining quilombolas in Jaguara and Palmital, belonging to the municipality of Nazareno, Minas Gerais. Based on the crossing of information from various sources - note books, word lists, post-mortem inventories, wills and interviews - the investigation entered the period of the 19th century, examining the formation, development, as well as the process of recognition as remaining quilombola communities and implications for recognition of property and land use within legal parameters in the 21st century. Thus, the research aims to contribute to the historical reconstitution of land occupation and maintenance by black communities that fight for their identity.

  • This thesis aims to present the path of São João Del-Rei (Minas Gerais) holy mothers and fathers. Through their memories and stories, it seeks to demarcate the existence of AfroBrazilian religions in the city where catholic traditions are reinforced as part of their identity. Through thesis we will walk the streets of the city and the paths of the interview priests so that is possible to access these other aspects of the municipality’s history, in addition to the Baroque churches and the old town, but passing through them. In the case of Afro-Brazilian religions, the notions that permeate the method used - oral history - proved to be consistent with the sociocultural reality of the terreiro communities, in which orality is the main continuity of their traditions.

  • This master’s dissertation is resulted to our investigation about the senses of honour shared between the habitants, mainly the women, from nineteenth century of Minas Gerais West. Through the criminal sues from historical Archive of Formiga’s Forum and other historical sources we check the mobilization of important virtues to personal reputation that conferred the honourability status. Arguments involving concept of honour could be used by who appealed the justice to repair a slander done to them name. Also by someone, involved in some crime, who wished to show honourability in front of the justice’s authorities. The demonstration of honour on the justice places was defence’s important part. Because, could to imply in the authorities’ decisions about the criminal sue. On the other hand, accuse the opponent’s infamy, or opponent’s shame, was a way to show superiority of values. Our approaches had focus in the region of Formiga, in the West of the province of Minas Gerais, between 1820s at 1870s, and our aim have been discovering the virtues that shaped the honour of the women from popular social strata.

  • The objective of this research is to unravel the story of slaved men and women at the County of Rio das Mortes, MG, Brazil, who faced the slave system and the power of the lordship to scape away. Regardless of what the motive was, running away wasn’t an easy thing to do in a society where values and interests were dictated by the slave owners without any input from the slaves’ side, and the main element used to identify the slave owners as a class was the possession of the slaves themselves. You can’t look at them slave owners and slaves separately, their time spent together and the slavery relationship shaped one another. At the final scenario of the slave era, after analyzing the slaves scapes reported by the newspape rs Arauto de Minas and Gazeta Mineira , as well as the criminal prosecution files where the motives were slave scapes, we aim to draw the
fugitive profile and the range of the abolitionist ideas for the region of Rio das Mort es. The transformations occurred at the time on the international scenario influenced the ideas and decisions made by the Brazilian Imperial society of 19th century, creating a favorable environment to the slave actions that affected the power of the lords of slaves. Besides that, certain habits of the captives which had already become rights, forced the legal system to bend toward the end of slavery, taking advantage of law flaws and economic frailty happening
then. However, the lordship interests prevaile d, and the attachment to slavery was a marking trait in the County of Rio das Mortes.

  • Resumen Espectáculo
  • This dissertation aims to study the manumissions registered in the São João del-Rei term, between 1830 and 1860. From the survey of these records, we sought to understand the relationships between the dynamics of the Atlantic slave trade and the freedom processes. The information contained in the letters of manumission allowed us to analyze quantitatively and qualitatively the profile of the liberated slaves, the modalities of the concessions, the motivations, and manorial conditions, the negotiations for freedom, and the meanings this information assumed for the agents involved in this process. By crossing these data with postmortem inventories and testaments of manumitted slaves, it was possible to know better the profile of these slave owners, the frequency with which they manumitted based in their memo books and in their wills, and the possibilities of manumission in their slave quarters. The results of this study indicate that manumission was deeply marked by asymmetrical power relations, which contributed to reinforce and reproduce the current social hierarchies and preserve the vitality of the slave order itself

  • This study presents an investigation about the wealth listed from 1871 to 1912 in the
district of Lage, municipality of Tiradentes/MG, a place inserted in the county District
of Rio das Mortes and aimed at supplying food in the domestic market of Minas Gerais
and in Rio de Janeiro, then capital of Brazil. Through the analysis of the post mortem
inventories it was possible to understand the economic dynamics of the region studied at
that time and what changes occurred in the fortunes of the wealthiest people in the
place, at that time still predominantly rural, but who felt the first effects of no longer be
a region of agricultural frontier. From this analysis it was possible to understand how
the individuals investigated, especially local farmers, behaved at a crucial moment in
Brazilian history, since at that time slavery experienced its decline until its
disappearance, capitalism began to penetrate the inner conservative from Minas Gerais
who also saw the maturation of cultural transformations, such as the resignification of
the criteria for choosing a spouse and the dismantling of the aristocratic ideal linked to
the agrarian world, among other important factors.

  • The objective of this work is to analyze criminal cases involving ex-female slaves, in Oliveira, Minas Gerais, from 1890 to 1905. Based on the information contained in the proceedings and a specific bibliography, it is intended to understand who these women were and how their cases were challenged by Justice. In addition, the question of socio-racial appointments will be analyzed, and how they worked immediately after the abolition in the municipality and in the social breasts of these women. Through printed sources, the discourses on the post-emancipation turnaround in Oliveira will still be investigated, in order to understand how this context was configured in the region. The research focuses mainly on the trajectories undertaken by ex-captives in post-abolition, trying to collaborate, even minimally, on current debates on history, racialization, gender and human rights. This work aims to follow the paths of the current Brazilian historiography, fitting in the most recent studies on the post-abolition.

  • This thesis analyzes the circus appearances made in the city of Oliveira, Minas Gerais, between 1888 and 1920. More specifically, we studied some of the effects of the installation of the Estrada de Ferro Oeste de Minas in Oliveira in the late 19th century, for the transportation of circuses and the expansion of its offer of presentations. In such circumstances, we identified artistic companies that visited the city, the contribution of the railroad in its routes and repertoire of attractions. A set of newspapers that circulated in Oliveira at the end of the 19th century and the first two decades of the 20th century were used as the main research source. Documents produced by public agencies and works by memorialists were used as well. n this way, the work contributes to the deepening of the analysis about the circus, placing it as an important phenomenon for understanding the social life of Minas Gerais until the beginning of the 20th century.

  • The present study analyzes the process of schooling and the experience of teachers in the term of Mariana between the years of 1827 and 1835. During the research the importance of the teachers' performance in the region and the intense debate about the development of education, understood as decisive to constitute a more civilized and moralized society. The defenses of the Catholic religion, of the Brazilian state, of work and of good manners were essential in the program that was designed for the youth. However, these projects have sometimes not been implemented in everyday practice. Obstacles, such as the precarious physical and material structure and difficulties in teacher training, were almost insurmountable obstacles in that period. This study still seeks to understand briefly the circulation of the booklet Poor Richard's Almanac, important work of Benjamin Franklin. The booklet, first published in the eighteenth century, obtained several editions throughout the 19th century. We located the donation of several volumes of a Portuguese edition to the City Council of Mariana in the period studied. The purpose was to be used by teachers in the region. We try to relate the contents of the brochure to the implementation plan of the Mutual Teaching and to the process of social disciplinarization through school teaching. It was possible to see how useful time, discipline and work became positive values in the education proposals in which the teachers studied were involved.

To achieve this goal, the story of this print was first constructed and related to its publication to other similar initiatives also developed during the second half of the nineteenth century. Subsequently, the present study analyzed the relations between the linked images in the work cited above and a conscious attempt to create a certain narrative memory of the construction of the new capital of the state of Minas Gerais. Finally, this research still tries to identify the representations of modernity and civilizational progress contained in the photographs of the numerous architectonic and urbanistic projects created to compose the first planned city of the history of Brazil.

  • This study constitutes from the need to think about how media images are read by future historians in a cultural otherness context. Therefore, we took an object the perceptions of students from the 7th period of the history course at the Federal University of São João del Rei forward to what we call the Arab world. Adopting a qualitative approach to data collection and analysis, this research was conducted from the perspective of Historical Culture (Rüsen: 2009) from one of his privileged arms, the mass media. As empirical instrument we make use of a previous questionnaire, semi-structured interviews and exhibition of audiovisual material: soap opera excerpts from "The Clone" of Globo TV, animation of Disney, "Aladdin" 1992 and Network TV news clippings Globo displayed on September 11, 2001. In view of first and second order receptions (OROZCO: 1998), and mediations (Barbero: 1987) raised the references of the subject against Arabs and Muslims both from what they said important about the subject as the direct reading of these products media. We realize that the image of a East is still buoyed largely by the mass media that are read from the reference of each subject. In the spectrum of otherness or even critique the media, students of history is worth its epistemological framework more forcefully to thematize the Arab world spontaneously. Forward the videos the emotional identifications are more present guiding how much of the subject question the question.

  • ABSTRACT
This essay deals about of intrinsic aspects to philosophical genesis and intellectual of the
Medieval Latin-speaking Europe on the context of the University in the 13thcentury. To
concretize this analyze we use the concept of “single individual” (individuum singularis)
expressed by Franciscan friar JohnDuns Scotus (c.1266-1308). The significant changes in the
Medieval education field and, therefore, in the philosophy, means transformations about
philosophical realization on what the individual is in its uniqueness. Such transformations are
given by new text reception of the Hellenic philosophy, specially, Aristotle and muslin
falsafa. Therefore, between the Universities of Paris and Oxford, Duns Scotus used of the
available texts to form the concept of individualby its uniqueness and developed a different
way compared to his antecessors. Basically, in the Aristotelian philosophy, the individuals are
formed when they come down from categories (genus, species and individual). Thus, the last
individuals were considered like an effect of species division. In other hand, John Duns
Scotus sees that exist something beyond of the specifics relationships to form the “single
individual” (or individual in its uniqueness). To develop this way, Scotus used three axes: a)
the essence would not be shared, so it is itself; b) the formation of the intellectual
intelligibility (specie intelligibile) is in a duality universal and singular, and c) on the
positivation principle is restrained in the individuation of the beings. From these three ways,
    the Doctor Subtilis
developedthe perspective of the “singleindividual” or “individual in its uniqueness” for itself, the last, beyond of the species (ultra speciem);positive (against the platonic way) and nothing else can be said beyond its own singularity which is restrained in the individual.

  • The railway's expansion through Minas Gerais territory, in the last quarter of the nineteenth century, shows that the Brazilian economy at that time was not limited to agricultural production and its export trade networks. The situation that leads to the construction of railways southern Minas Gerais involves elements such as financial speculation, ideas of "progress" and "modernity" and spreads some values among the general population which are not consistent with the speech applied, but also appear as attempts to integration of parts of the Brazilian Empire to the Court. The market supply of Rio de Janeiro City with agricultural production of the south/southwest of Minas stands as the object of analysis in the context of strong expansion of railways in Brazil in the late nineteenth century. This expansion cannot be summarized to the binomial rail/agroexport. The state subsidy mechanisms were essential for the construction and expansion of southern Minas Gerais railroads, with the participation of the regional capital, with some exceptions, was very small.

  • Since the end of Pombal’s age, Brazilian and Portuguese decision makers were concerned about the problem of how to transform the indigenous communities into productive units. All the memories, reflections and projects proposed reflected colonial crisis' impasses and the necessities to modernize the luso-brazilian Ancien Régime. This dissertation aims to understand the various cleavages of the indigenous problem between 1808 and 1845, not just from a regional or national scope, but trying to figure out possible exchanges between the Court and the Province. It seeks to understand the circulation and interpretation of ideas among the various social literate strata in Bahia and Minas Gerais, two of the most important Brazilian Provinces, which had indigenous groups in their territories. In addition, both provinces share a common hinterland, with fluid boundaries and indigenous occupation, the “Sertão do Rio Doce”. Finally, this work proposes to understand the connections between indigenous policies and Indians’ representations in the two provinces, examine the debate on indigenous issues, analyze positions and proposals voiced by politicians and local elites and their possible national repercussions.

  • This research analyses the worship of Nossa Senhora dos Remédios (Our Lady of Medicines) based around the Irmandade do Rosário (Rosary Brotherhood) in the town of São João del-Rei, state of Minas Gerais, since the 18th century and its popular appeal in the first half of the 19th century. This study brings to light the discussion on strategies to establish collective identities for several groups that interacted in the same conviviality space. Here, worship is understood as a process of building up a group bond that had as its catalysts two symbolic aspects connected to the image of the saint: that of freedom and that of health. Among the analyzed aspects the following stand out: the context where the brotherhood moved about and the way it changed through time; the profile of members, the organization of groups within the brotherhood, and also their strategies to keep their positions in the hierarchy; and the worship rituals based around the institution and their symbolic aspects. The research employs both quantitative and qualitative analysis methods, as well as cross analysis of names, all propositions of microhistory.

  • “Clube da Esquina” was a group of artists, mostly from Minas Gerais, formed by Milton Nascimento, Wagner Tiso, the brothers Márcio and Lô Borges, Beto Guedes, Fernando Brant, Ronaldo Bastos, Toninho Horta etc. In the 1970s, “Clube da Esquina” has won national and international recognition for bring to the general public aesthetic and ideological contents, which used to combine foreign music with Brazilian music through new processes of hybridization. Heirs of revolutionary romanticism of the '60s and its movement of "going to the people", Milton and “Clube da Esquina” made the “mineiridade” (regional identity of Minas Gerais) an embodiment of romanticism. However, while questioning the capitalist modernity, they have not left to talk to some of its elements, proposing a new articulation between the local and the global, what would allow them to say: "I am from the world, I'm Minas Gerais".
