ABSTRACT

The right to education in Brazil has undergone setbacks and advances since the Imperial
Constitution of 1824, and was only recognized as a social right in 1988. And, in the sphere of
basic education, secondary education has been the subject of several discussions regarding its
specificity, given the dichotomy between preparation for entry into higher education or for the
job market. In 1996, secondary education had its identity recognized with the enactment of the
Law of Guidelines and Bases of National Education (Law No. 9.394/96). In this context, the
Federal Institutes of Education, Science and Technology were created as a public educational
policy in order to overcome this opposition, addressing basic education and professional
training in an integrated manner, without valuing one to the detriment of the other. Thus, the
objective of this study is to identify the main reasons that influenced students to enter the
Integrated Secondary Education of the IF Sudeste MG campus São João del-Rei. The
methodology has a qualitative approach, using secondary data together with primary data
obtained through questionnaires and interviews. The questionnaires were applied to students
regularly enrolled in Integrated High School courses at IF Sudeste MG – São João del-Rei
campus, and the interviews were conducted with Integrated High School teachers who occupy
strategic positions in the institution. As a result, it was found that students entered the institution
due to the quality of teaching in the basic cycle of high school and, in a complementary way,
the possibility of obtaining a technical level education. In addition, it was found that IF Sudeste
MG São João del-Rei campus plays an important role in the development of students, being an
institution that offers a different education from regular schools, providing an integrated and
comprehensive education of the human being, through teaching, research, extension,
encouragement of sports, student assistance and respect for diversity.
