SUMMARY:

In a society structured only for typical forms of body functioning, having a disability can lead to discrimination and social exclusion, which makes its acquisition throughout life a negatively seen experience. Considering that work is coated with great social value, this research sought to investigate psychosocial and organizational developments related to the return to work of people with physical disabilities acquired due to a workplace accident. Aiming to articulate different experiences relevant to the theme, open interviews were conducted with three groups of participants: 20 workers who acquired physical disability due to work-related accidents, 21 professionals working in the Human Resources area, and 23 professionals working in the Occupational Health and Safety. The interviews were carried out via video communication programs and analyzed by the content analysis method, considering the presence or absence of themes in the participants' reports. In relation to people with disabilities, we identified psychosocial aspects (meanings attributed to the work, openness to experiences and the construction of knowledge, influence of a conception of disability based on assumptions of normality) mobilizing the return (or not) to work after the accident/acquired disability. Moreover, perceptions were discussed about how the quality of the financial/psychosocial support offered by the companies and the way they conducted the reinsertion actions impacted the process of returning to the context of the accident. Also reported were processes of resignification of the work accident/acquired disability, as well as perspectives and repercussions of these experiences. As for the Human Resources professionals, the analysis of the interviews enabled the identification of organizational factors concerning the support and reinsertion of employees after work-related accidents, as well as the influence of the relationship between employees and organizations on the development of these actions. Moreover, it was discussed how the organizational availability to make adaptations in the working conditions consisted in one of the main points when approaching the return to work of people with disabilities acquired by work accident. Finally, as far as the Occupational Health and Safety professionals are concerned, the reinsertion processes of people who had an accident/disease at work were articulated to the accident prevention actions, to the impacts and to the investigations about causes and responsibility in these cases, discussing prevention and disability inclusion practices. It is considered that the return to work of people with disabilities acquired by a labor accident, in order to constitute a process that goes beyond the mere compliance with the labor legislation, requires, in many situations, the adjustment of the organizational environment, but it must encompass, mainly, the promotion of changes in the ways of seeing and dealing with disability. In the search for promoting a process of return to work that is successful for workers and for organizations, it is necessary to go beyond the search for causes only in individuals, but to look for answers in the way society and companies pay attention to the situation of vulnerability that disability represents in an prejudiced social structure. It is understood, therefore, that organizations must be willing to carry out actions that enable the necessary rehabilitation and welcoming after an accident at work, in addition to practices that enable, in fact, the inclusion of people with disabilities, regardless of the reasons that produced it, but, especially, in these cases, whose responsibility is often shared.
