Recovery is understood within the field of mental health as the personal recovery of people with experience of psychological distress, characterized by the development and construction of a meaningful life despite the symptoms of a mental disorder. However, there are no studies in Brazil that investigate how the recovery process occurs in depression. This study aims to understand how the recovery process occurs in people with depressive episodes within the context of community health and mental health services. The study also aimed to identify factors that favor and hinder the recovery process in depression.  For this purposese, a qualitative study was conducted, in which the narratives of the participants were examined through Thematic Analysis from the perspective of Braun & Clark.  Sixteen users of the mental health outpatient clinic of São João del-Rei, indicated by health professionals, with primary diagnosis of depression (unipolar or bipolar), of both sexes and ages between 18 and 76 years participated in the study. The results of the study indicated that the factors that favored recovery were consonant with the domains of the CHIME theoretical framework, which is the most cited in the literature, with the connection with significant others and the development of hope in the future being the most present aspects. Spirituality and work were identified as the two main elements that aided in the recovery process. Regarding the factors that hinder the recovery process, the following were pointed out: social isolation, stigma, lack of understanding of other people about the loss of functionality resulting from the disorder and the absence of purpose or meaning in life.
