SUMMARY:

The overall objective of this doctoral thesis was to present, from the perspective of workers with disabilities, how individual aspects related to life trajectory (family and education) along with organizational aspects related to working conditions influence the perception of autonomy in the workplace. While national and international literature identifies some elements of these aspects, no studies were found that articulate their interface among people with disabilities. To achieve this general objective, the thesis was developed and presented in the form of two chapters: 1) In the first chapter, individuals with disabilities who had professional qualifications and held positions corresponding to their education were investigated. The objective was to assess how family and educational aspects influenced their professional development. People with disabilities from all regions of Brazil were interviewed. The analysis of the interviews was conducted through content analysis. Coping behaviors of parents were identified, including attention and clarity in identifying the needs of their children, obtaining suitable resources, and adaptations in educational processes. Inadequacies in the learning processes in specialized schools were also observed, as well as difficulties in accessing and staying in regular schools. 2) The second chapter, the core of the thesis, aimed to identify how family and educational support, in addition to the work context, contribute to the autonomy in the workplace for people with disabilities. Two inventories on family support and educational support for people with disabilities were developed and validated. These, along with questions related to accessibility in the current work context and autonomy in the workplace, were administered to 235 people with disabilities from all regions of Brazil. It was found that encouragement, support, and stimulation from families, as well as the presence of adaptations in equipment and work tools, play a significant role in promoting autonomy in the workplace.
