SUMMARY:

This thesis was based on the reading of the novel So far from God, written in 1993 by the American author Ana Castillo. Daughter of a Mexican-American father and an immigrant Mexican mother, the writer is heavily influenced by her Mexican ancestry. In this way, this work can be considered as part of Chicano literature. Chicano or Chicana is a term used to name Americans of Mexican descent. This word can carry a negative connotation, being used to refer to a low-income person, in a pejorative way, or to people who cross the border Mexico – United States illegally. The Chicano people are victims of prejudice and don’t feel welcomed neither by Mexico, which considers them gringos, nor for the United States, which consider them intruders. Chicana writers recover this term and show pride in using it as a way of recognizing and being proud of their origins. Chicano literature started developing in the 1960s and began to reflect the influence suffered by colonial conquests. The main theme is the experience of the people themselves. The sub-themes are controlling gender roles, control and violence against women's bodies and sexuality, discrimination and religiosity. Chicana writers recover myths, legends and stories that validate and propagate the inequalities of power between men and women. Legends that are often used to socialize women into traditional submissive roles. The authors’ aim is to expose these false stories and create their own visions of these legends in fictional and autobiographical works. Ana Castillo is a Chicana feminist writer, so this revisiting of stories that are often used to disguise the interests of a group in power and create a form of female submission can be seen in So far from God. The proposed objective for the production of this work is to show that the characters of the work So far From God – Sofia, Esperanza, Caridad, Fe and La Loca – can be read from a perspective that aims to show their similarity with the myths revisited in chapter 2. and the feminist theories explored in chapter 1, in order to represent them as women who did not let themselves be carried away by the patriarchy imposed by society and sought their place of power, challenging the prejudice of the society in which they lived.
