SUMMARY:

Fear, a primitive feeling and common to creatures of different time, geographical and cultural spaces, is reported in different ways, bearing causes, consequences, types and appearances diverse. The aesthetics of fear travels through narratives being fictional or real, in verbal or nonverbal media. This dissertation aims to analyze how the aesthetics of fear permeates the short stories The Cask of Amontillado and The Tell Tale Heart, by Edgar Allan Poe and its adaptations in the form of (a) rewritten exemplified by short stories by Lygia Fagundes Telles, (b) illustrations by classical artists such as Harry Clarke and Arthur Rackham and contemporaries ones such as Landis Blair and Mariana Funes, (c) animations of the Encyclopedia Britannica and Columbia Pictures, and, finally, (d) songs from an album of the band The Alan Parsons Project. Thus, we will analyze the selected works in order to observe how fear is manifested in narratives according to the specificities of each media and its historical and cultural contexts. For this purpose, the analyses will occur in the light of intermedial studies, more specifically transmediality according to Irina Rajewsky, who studies the relationship through the media, also adopting the traveling concept proposed by Mieke Bal. Adrienne Rich's notion of re-vision will be addressed for the analysis of rewriting as a formo f adaptation. Thus, we will verify how the fear, this feeling so well-known and, at the same time, uncanny is configured in the narratives in order to arouse in the reader different sensations and reflections.
