SUMMARY:

This dissertation is grounded in the theoretical framework of Critical Discourse Studies
(CDS), as this investigative approach critically examines the role of language in shaping
societal life (Van Dijk, 2018). In the context of this work, we explore the discursivization
of women, focusing on discourses that enforce the obligation of beauty and the
conditioning of the female body by the ideals of institutional power and male domination.
Utilizing the analytical triad of Discourse-Cognition-Society, we unveil the discursive
strategies that underlie the domination imposed by powerful groups in society, leading to
cognitive oppression of subjugated groups (Van Dijk, 2015, 2016). In this vein, this
research aims to answer the following questions: How does the discourse of beauty
establish itself as an ideological orientation, and how does power instrumentalize the
discourse of beauty as a mechanism for reproducing and sustaining male domination? The
central objective of this study is to conduct a sociocognitive analysis to understand how
the discourse of beauty becomes an ideological orientation, imposing obligations on
women defined and affirmed by the Beauty Myth. Furthermore, we seek to comprehend
how power employs the discourse of beauty as a mechanism for reproducing and sustaining
male domination. The corpus for analysis comprises posts from advertisements for
aesthetic procedures on the social media platform Instagram, addressing symbols,
meanings, and discourses constructed throughout history about the ideal of beauty as a
form of control and power over women. The theoretical contributions of Gerda Lerner,
Pierre Bourdieu, Roland Barthes, Michel Foucault, Judith Butler, Naomi Wolf, Teun A.
Van Dijk, among others, provide the theoretical framework for the discussion. Thus, the
research explores how the beauty myth develops the discourse of beauty and aesthetic
standards, acting as a mechanism to exert and maintain institutional power over men,
female submission, and male domination.
