SUMMARY:

In this research we intent to study one of Lídia Jorge's novels, A noite das mulheres cantoras, aiming to observe how the construction of the first person narrative of the character Solange Matos allows an analysis of the representation made of Portuguese society by the author. To do that we will study how memory is used in the construction of the character's narrative discourse and how it allows us to catch a glimpse of a part of Portugal that has been silenced. Based on the narrative theory of authors like Friedman (2002), Genette (1995), Lubbock (1976) and Benjamin (1987), we intend to perceive how the way that Solange narrates her memories works as an instrument to reconstruct her identity and manipulate the past. It is necessary, therefore, that we also investigate what constitutes memory and identity and for that we will use theorists such as Sarlo (2007) Pollak (1989; 1992), Bhabha (1998) and Halbwachs (1990).
