SUMMARY:

The present work proposes to map the interpretations of two Brazilian intellectuals, Lilia M. Schwarcz and Jessé Souza, about the rupture of the political project of class conciliation proposed by the Workers' Party (PT) from 2003 to 2016, which accommodated the interests of dominant sectors of society as well as implemented social policies that benefited the most poor. Both are social scientists with significant academic production, who are also involved in the public debate on the conjuncture of the period that goes from the June 2013 Manifestations until the impeachment of President Dilma Rousseff in 2016, when there was a rupture in the PT conciliation project which, among other things, resulted in the election of Jair Bolsonaro in 2018. We examine the works of Schwarcz and Souza before and after the impeachment of President Dilma Rousseff, with the purpose of reflecting on the participation of these social scientists in the dispute of interpretations of sociopolitical events in the country and also in their effort to speak to the general public.
