Slavery, Escapes, Press, Rio de Janeiro, 19th century
In this work, through the analysis of seven thousand advertisements of fugitive slaves, published between the years 1831 and 1850 in the Diário do Rio de Janeiro periodical, we seek to understand the ways in which slaves socially inserted themselves in the urban world of the largest slave city Atlantic during the experience of their captivity, as well as the motivations and strategies of these historical actors in a crucial moment of their lives, the one that, in the limit, would allow them to break or negotiate their condition of enslaved.
