THE SPORTS CHRONICLE IN THE POLITICAL AND CULTURAL DEBATE
CONTEMPORARY: AN ANALYSIS OF FRED'S CHRONICLES
MELO PAIVA (2011-2019)
Fred Melo Paiva; sports chronicle; soccer; policy.
This work aims to analyze the sociopolitical and cultural content explored by the chronicles of Fred Melo Paiva, for the column “Da Arquibancada'' in the newspaper Estado de Minas, between the years 2011 and 2019. Analysis of the 350 chronicles published over that period. Subsequently, we cataloged the chronicles through the categorization of their themes. By addressing in his chronicles the themes that relate the universe of football to politics, the chronicler in question outlines criticisms of the current political moment, mainly governments and conservative morals, in order to mark his progressive position. The narratives mobilize descriptions of events related to the soccer metier, relating them to political agendas and social issues that permeate Brazilian daily life. We present this study in two chapters: it addresses “athleticism” or the identity of Clube Atlético Mineiro supporters, through the use of various figures of speech that make up Fred Melo Paiva's rhetoric. In the second chapter, we analyze themes related to institutional politics that set the tone of football chronicles. Through the analysis of the chronicles, we realized to what extent the identity profile of the chronicler – athletic and progressive – leaves marks on his textual production and instigates the debate of social and political themes.
