SUMMARY:

The objective of this dissertation is to analyze the performance of the Society for the Defense of Independence and National Freedom of the village of São João del-Rei, which, as well as other branches implemented after the creation of the headquarters, in the city of Rio de Janeiro, had the intention of support of the moderate liberal elite in the period 1831-1835. The research was developed from different sources (minutes, periodicals and correspondence) and in dialogue with the historiography about its counterparts in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, to verify to what extent the Defender of São João del-Rei distinguished itself and it resembled the others, with a comparative emphasis on the city of Rio de Janeiro.
