“FOOTBALL [...] IS A DEMOCRATIC ACTIVITY, CONDITIONED BY PASSION, BUT DEMOCRATIC”: POLICY IN THE SPORTS CHRONICLES OF ROBERTO DRUMMOND DURING THE 1978 AND 1982 WORLD CUP

This research seeks to analyze the sports chronicles written by Roberto Drummond in the daily column Bola na Marca, from the newspaper Estado de Minas, during the Football World Cups of 1978 and 1982, to compare the author's speech during the late 1990s. 1970, in the civil-military dictatorship, with the beginning of the 1980s, in the slow and gradual return of the country to democracy. The time frame is due to the importance of the events for the sporting world, with attention focused on the Cup and its games. Furthermore, as will be seen here, the preliminary analysis of the sources indicates that some relevant political manifestations were carried out by athletes participating in the tournaments, such as the player Reinaldo, in 1978.
