SUMMARY:

The present study aims to analyze the contribution of instruments from the National
Student Assistance Program (PNAES) to students with socioeconomic vulnerability at
the Federal University of São João del-Rei. This work proposes an investigative and
critical analysis of the history of actions related to student assistance from PNAES, its
constructions, and the identification of which actors or movements were in the creation
of local policies to support student permanence. The effectiveness of retention tools in
the daily life of assisted students is sought, as well as an understanding of the
importance of this action in the pedagogical and political context for combating evasion.
From the understanding of income, the contradictions between capitalism and
affirmative actions that seek to consolidate a truly democratic public education have
been analyzed. The methodological tools used focus on the social context intertwined
with documentary analysis, interviews, and narrative construction. Future perspectives
for the work include conducting interviews with students assisted by policies derived
from PNAES and those who were previously excluded from public higher education
due to lack of socioeconomic assistance, seeking complementary data, and
constructing narratives.
