SUMMARY:

This research has as its central theme the Laboratory of Education in Philosophy (LAFIL) of
Universidade Federal de São João del-Rei. (UFSJ) with the objective of investigating the
possible contributions of this laboratory from their Extension Program “Community of
Philosophical inquiry” (CIF), in the work with philosophy for and with children, in the early
years of public schools in the city of São João del-Rei, Minas Gerais. The research theme
arises from the researcher’s experience for five years as a volunteer at LAFIL. This laboratory
has as one of its objective thinking and studying the possibilities of teaching philosophy based
on contributions several thinkers, among them Matthew Lipman, who systematized the
philosophy for children in the sixties in the USA and Walter Kohan, who has been working
with philosophy with children in Brazil. They are also our base references in this work, which
is built from a bibliographic survey, analysis of documentary sources, such as reports from
schools that received the Extension Program, views, projects, and interviews with
coordinators of the partner schools. The work presented here is organized as follows:
researcher's presentation, introduction, LAFIL's presentation, since its creation and passing
through the CIF Extension Program, theoretical bases that constitute LAFIL and CIF and,
finally, a first interview conducted with one of the coordinators of one LAFIL’s partner
school. In this way, we will focus on comparing different perceptions of the same program.
Autonomy of thinking and reasonableness are also dear concepts to this research because they
contributes to thinking about this research and the philosophical practice for and with
children. The steps we have taken here aim to explore ways to reflect on the possibilities of
philosophy teaching in school's early years, indicating directions and possibilities, without
intending to exhaust the walk.
