SUMMARY:

The search for alternative sources of energy that can replace fossil fuels and mitigate the impacts generated by the acceleration of global warming drives the development and improvement of technologies for the generation of biofuels. Lignocellulosic ethanol obtained from lignocellulosic biomass from agricultural residues is a promising alternative. In this sense, the present work proposes the evaluation of the pre-treatment, saccharification and fermentation process for the production of ethanol from the lignocellulosic biomass of açaí seed residues (Euterpe oleracea Mart.), since this fruit represents a great impact social, economic and environmental for the northern region of Brazil. For this purpose, the characterization of the biomass in natura and after saccharification, studies of pre-treatment with diluted and hydrothermal acid were carried out, varying the pH adjustment of the biomass with NaOH (2N) and with washing, followed by saccharification using the commercial enzyme ROHALASE® GMP, from AB Enzymes. The liquors obtained both after pre-treatment and after saccharification were analyzed for their sugar profile by high-performance liquid chromatography. Pre-treatment with diluted acid proved to be effective in solubilizing hemicellulose. New studies with hydrothermal pre-treatment and saccharification must be carried out in order to vary the parameters and optimize the process. The results obtained so far demonstrate the potential for the development of a bioconversion technology of one of the main agro-industrial by-products of the northern region of Brazil with lignocellulosic characteristics into a promising source of sustainable renewable energy.
