SUMMARY:

Considering the tendency to reduce the availability of oil and the climate changes it causes, such as global warming, economically viable and sustainable energies are needed, such as ethanol. Second generation ethanol (2G) is obtained by processing lignocellulosic waste. Before fermentation, pre-treatment and biomass hydrolysis steps are necessary to obtain fermentable sugars. As an option for acid or alkali pre-treatments, which are environmentally polluting and harmful to reactors, hydrothermal pre-treatment can be carried out, which produces fewer inhibitors and is free of chemical reagents. Microstructural analysis and characterization of biomass before and after hydrothermal pretreatment to study biomass modifications can inform the feasibility of cellulosic ethanol production and the best conditions to which biomass will be subjected for hydrolysis.
