KEY WORDS:

PAGES: 59
BIG AREA: Multidisciplinar
AREA: Biotecnologia
SUMMARY:

In recent years the concern and search for alternative fuels has intensified globally. In this scenario, studies aimed at the production of fuel alcohol and biodiesel in Brazil and in the world have become of fundamental importance, driving several sectors to seek technologies that can contribute to socioeconomic and environmental development. In this context, the present work aimed to integrate the two main Brazilian energy matrices, from the characterization of the co-products from the biodiesel chain to evaluate the potential for ethanol production, and also the production of this fuel from the most promising ones. In order to know the composition of the fruits and other biomass object of study, the physical and chemical characterization of the samples was carried out, with the determination of the moisture, ash, total lipids, fiber, cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin contents. From the analyzed biomasses, the mesocarp and almond pies, in addition to the epicarp, presented amounts of carbohydrates that can be used for the production of ethanol, both cellulosic and hemicellulosic. The other biomasses, dry leaf, empty bunch and spathe, did not present sufficient amounts of carbohydrates to be used for ethanol production. The studied strains produced hemicellulosic ethanol with Y p/s values compatible with others reported in the literature. Ethanol production ranged from 7.24 to 10.34 gp gs-1 and fermentation efficiency was up to 76%. Fermentation conditions were not optimized, which leaves room for optimization studies. The production of cellulosic ethanol will still be evaluated using different commercial strains of Saccharomyces cerevisiae, thus integrating the concept of biorefinery.
