SUMMARY:

The growing demand for food has made Brazil one of the biggest consumers of fertilizers in the world. However, this dependence has greatly increased the cost of agricultural production and combined with the change in the population's consumption pattern, alternatives are increasingly being sought to reduce the importation of nutrients. Brazil stands out not only in agriculture, but also in the production of pig iron, with the city of Sete Lagoas - MG as one of the most important in the steel sector. Steel slag is a by-product of the production of pig iron that has a high content of silicates. Silicon (Si) is considered a beneficial element and has been ignored for many years in agriculture. Research has shown improvement in plant nutritional quality and beneficial effects in correcting soil acidity. The tailings, produced in large quantities, can be used in agriculture, mainly for crops considered to accumulate Si, such as corn. Thus, the objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of steel slag as a source of silicate in the correction of soil acidity and its effect on growth and productivity variables in corn. The work was carried out in the experimental field University Federal de São João del-Rei – Sete Lagoas campus, located in the central region of Minas Gerais. The experiment was carried out in randomized blocks, consisting of 6 treatments (slag doses) and 4 replications. The slag was pre-treated and distributed at doses equivalent to 0 (control), 50, 100, 200, 400 and 800 kg ha-1 of SiO2. The variables analyzed were those related to plant growth and productivity, as well as leaf Si content, pH and soluble Si in the soil. As a complement and descriptive analysis, the amount of soluble Si in the slag and its neutralizing power (PN) was also determined. None of the analyzed variables presented a significant result, probably due to the low solubilization of the silicate source used, however, it was possible to observe a high content of Si in the leaf tissue of the plant, indicating that it has a greater ability to extract silicic acid from the soil of the plant than CaCl2.
