SUMMARY:

The market for organic maize grains is growing in Brazil and meeting this demand requires the adoption of sustainable cultivation strategies. The inoculation of microorganisms can provide increases in productivity and sustainability. In this sense, we evaluated the effect of co-inoculation of Azospirillum, Bacillus and Rhizoglomus in an organic maize production system in the central region of Minas Gerais. In the 2021/2022 harvest in Capim Branco (CB), with landrace maize inoculated with Azospirillum, Bacillus and Rhizoglomus. In São Sebastião D’Oeste (SSO), with BRS Caimbé and BRS 1060 inoculated with Bacillus and Rhizoglomus. The treatments were arranged in strips with three replications. In the 2022/2023 harvest in Sete Lagoas (SL), BRS Caimbé inoculated with Azospirillum, Bacillus and Rhizoglomus, in a 2x2x2 factorial design in randomized blocks with 5 replications. Chemical and biological fertility was assessed (BioAs) before planting. The variables studied were enzyme activity in the soil, mycorrhizal colonization rate and productivity. There was no statistical difference in productivity in the two harvests evaluated (Landrace maize CB, Caimbé and BRS 1060 SSO and Caimbé SL 5094.23; 6745,3 and 5198.77; and Kg/ha 6309.42 respectively). The enzymatic activity of arylsulfatase and betaglucosidase 501 and 174 μg PNF/g.h in CB and 402 and 145 μg PNF/g.h in SSO, and 315 and 282 μg PNF/g.h in SL respectively – reached the optimal range by BioAS. The mycorrhizal colonization rate was statistically higher in the area cultivated with BRS 1060, but the highest average value was in the non-inoculated treatment, 57.66%. In CB there was an increase in the production of landrace maize inoculated with Bacillus and co-inoculated with Azospirillum, Bacillus and Rhizoglomus, 21 and 17 bags, respectively. In SSO, the productivity of BRS Caimbé reached the highest rates when co-inoculated with Bacillus and Rhizoglomus, 112 bags/ha – 13 bags more than the control, the productivity of BRS 1060 was higher in the non-inoculated treatment, 95 bags/ha. In SL, the productivity of BRS Caimbé was higher in the non-inoculated treatment (107 bags). This level of productivity is similar to that of Caimbé in SSO inoculated with Bacillus and Rhizoglomus – demonstrating that the response to inoculation is dependent on local soil and climate variables.
