Sorghum is considered the fifth most produced cereal in the world. Used in animal and human food, and has gained prominence in recent years with increases in production and planted area. Currently, sorghum crops have been the target of infestations of the yellow aphid Melanaphis sorghi (Theobald) (Hemiptera: Aphididae). The injuries caused by M. sorghi cause severe economic losses. The period of greatest infestation is observed in the transition phase between the vegetative and reproductive periods of plants. The yellow aphid has high reproductive rates, leading to greater concern due to the fact that there are still no confirmed efficient control tactics. The search for cultivars resistant to M. sorghi could be an initial alternative for controlling that species in sorghum crops. Thus, the objective was to select grain sorghum genotypes resistant to attack by the yellow aphid M. sorghi and to suggest possible resistance mechanisms expressed by the materials that present better performance. The studies were carried out in a greenhouse with a temperature of 26 ± 2ºC and relative humidity of 60 ± 10%. Twenty eight grain sorghum hybrids and lines from the Embra pa Milho e Sorgo germplasm bank were infested with M. sorghi. The genotypes BRS310, BRS373, CMSXS3017 and CMSXS3014 are resistant to yellow aphid attack. Such genotypes should be prioritized in the genetic improvement program, aiming to minimize the use of insecticides, reduce production costs and more efficient use of sorghum IPM.
