SUMMARY:

Introduction: During dental care, the dental surgeon’s (DS) lack of knowledge regarding the preoperative management of patients with some hemorrhagic or thrombotic predisposition/condition (the latter using medication to reduce the hypercoagulable potential), may endanger their health.  Dental practice with competence and safety requires knowledge that until then has been little explored by most DSs. Familiarity with several laboratory tests that allow the evaluation of an individual's hemostatic response through the proper interpretation of their results is essential for the DSs, since they have great clinical value. Objective: To assess the knowledge and impact of bleeding disorders in dental practice. Methods: DSs  from the state of Minas Gerais participated in this descriptive observational cross-sectional study, working in public service, private service or both, who concluded their course in the period between 1970 to 2021. In order to obtain data for further analysis, a question was created in Google forms, which was sent to all DSs  enrolled in the CRO-MG. Results: For the present study, 389 DSs were eligible, most of whom were female. Of these, most reported not having knowledge about some coagulopathies and thrombocytopathies, requesting only bleeding time (TS) and prothrombin time (PT) even when performing invasive procedures. Most have already assisted patients using drugs that interfere with hemostasis, such as oral anticoagulants and antiplatelet agents, but they have never faced a case of unexpected postoperative bleeding. Most participants also reported never having observed oral petechiae and gingival bleeding. Despite the DSs performing invasive procedures, their responses revealed a significant lack of knowledge about the use of anticoagulants and laboratory tests for their monitoring. As a complement to this study, a quick reference manual for DSs is being prepared. Conclusions: a) The knowledge of DSs about hemostatic disorders and their implications for dental practice is still insufficient; b) Requesting and interpreting laboratory tests still requires greater expertise of the subject; c) Knowledge about the use of oral anticoagulants, as well as their due monitoring is still incipient; and d) There is a need to make efforts seeking better qualification of DSs  in the subject of the present study.
