SUMMARY:

Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is a neglected tropical disease that has major impacts on public health. Brazil has the majority of cases of human visceral leishmaniasis (HVL) in the American continent. The form of transmission of HVL in the country is of the zoonotic type, with the dog having a prominent role in the urban cycle of the disease. In this sense, for the improvement of the control and prevention of VL conducts, it is essential to understand the risk factors related to the occurrence of canine visceral leishmaniasis (CVL), because although some risk factors are consolidated, others are still controversial and little understood. Therefore, the research aims to analyze individual and ecological factors associated with CVL, in addition to estimating the prevalence of the disease in dogs domiciled in the municipality of Divinópolis (MG). This is an analytical sectional epidemiological study, in which visits to randomly selected households were carried out, covering seven strata of the municipality. Initially, diagnostic tests for screening LVC (DPP ®) and confirmatory (ELISA) were performed. Subsequently, visits were made to apply a questionnaire to dogs. This questionnaire dealt with factors associated with CVL. Ecological data was also collected for the analyzes. To date, univariate and bivariate statistics have been analyzed. 704 dogs were capable of which 47 tested positive for LVC, thus resulting in an overall prevalence of 6.7%. There were higher prevalences of CVL in dogs that were not fed commercial feed; that were acquired as adults; who were raised predominantly outside the residence or who had free access to the street; and owners had no schooling. Multivariate analyzes will still be carried out using multilevel models identifying the information of which variables have a statistically significant independent association with the occurrence of CVL.
