SUMMARY:

Introduction: The new coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2), which causes “CoronavirusDisease 2019” (COVID-19), was responsible for the emergence of a pandemicstatus started in the first months of 2020. During social distancing, a groupthat drew attention was the delivery men, who during the pandemic, expandedtheir activities. His role in delivering goods and maintaining the economywasessential. Their exposure to risk increases the chance of infection, makingthempossible vectors of the disease. (ORTIZ-PRADO et al., 2021). Justification: The present research project is justified by the need of maintainingsocial distancing and understanding the role of delivery riders in the epidemiologyof the virus. Objectives: To understand the impact of COVID-19 (SARS-CoV-2) infection on the health and work of delivery riders and to compare the infectionproportions of the group of delivery riders to a control group. Methodology: Clinical samples were collected in two stages for anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibodyscreening and SARS-CoV-2 viral RNA screening for both groups. Thecontrol group was extract from the SARS-CoV-2 Prevalence research project inDivinópolis, Minas Gerais, 2020. The population of the Project was obtainedfrom users of Basic Health Units (BHU). A questionnaire to collect dataonsocial profile and prevention of COVID-19 was applied among delivery people. The variables were compared using the Mann-Whitney and Chi-Squaretestswith a significance level of 5%. Results: In all analyzed stages, ahigher prevalence was observed in control group, with significant difference in thefirst stage. There was a difference between the steps for the increase of positivesinthe rapid test in the group of delivery riders. Among the social and occupational characteristics, the proportions of infection were higher among delivery ridersover 60 years old, self-reported black color/race, who performed more than50daily rides and who carried out delivery and payment by contact. Thelower level of knowledge of the delivery riders influenced the high prevalenceinthegroups that selected the wrong answers to identify risk groups, symptoms, andforms of contamination. Regarding personal care, delivery riders practicedlesssocial distancing than masks usage. Regarding hand disinfection, a significant difference was observed in those who said they sanitized their handsless VIII frequently after going to the bathroom and who said they were not in thehabit of cleaning their cell phone. Conclusion: Our work was the first to associatetheproportion of infection in the population of delivery workers, with a structuredquestionnaire on social and occupational characteristics and comparetoacontrol group. Although the proportions of the control group were higher, thefact that the population was extract from a health care environment mayhaveinfluenced the results found. Our findings agree with other found withpeopleworking with delivery riders (ORTIZ-PRADO et al., 2021) and in other studiesthat evaluated the prevalence of groups that worked in person duringthepandemic
