SUMMARY:

The natural evolution of the disease and the treatment of patients after COVID-19 are not yet
complete. It was expected that only a small portion of infected patients would progress to
severe cases and would need long-term follow-up but as the pandemic progressed, it was
realized that symptoms can be persistent even in mild cases, generating a new demand for the
units of health. The main prevalent symptoms are fatigue, dyspnea, tachycardia and muscle
wasting. All these symptoms are related and can influence the quality of life and functional
capacity of patients. Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate the association between
quality of life and functional capacity after infection by COVID-19. The study presented an
observational, cross-sectional and analytical approach. Twenty-eight adults attended at a
rehabilitation center in Divinópolis-MG participated in the study. Data were collected through
interviews with the application of the SF-36 questionnaire and six-minute walk and 6 -minute
pegboard and ring test (6PBRT) . Quality of life and functional capacity scores were
compared between groups with and without a history of hospitalization, with and without a
history of physical activity, and the correlation between the functional tests and the SF 36
domains was tested. The group with a history of hospitalization had a worse condition in
general health and the group that practiced physical activity before the infection, presented
better scores of functional capacity. No correlations were found between the SF36 domains
and the functional tests. this study shows that the contagion by COVID-19 can cause greater
damage to the quality of life in individuals who needed hospitalization when compared to
those who did not. The constant practice of physical activity can contribute to higher levels of
functional capacity in the post-contagion period and, finally, the functional capacity was not
related to the individuals' quality of life.
