SUMMARY:

The objective is to verify the clinical characteristics, associated comorbidities and outcomes of COVID-19 in adolescents. This is a systematic review study based on articles published between 2020 and 2022 in PubMed, VHL, Science Direct, Web of Science and Scopus databases. 1.188 were studies identified. After applying the selection criteria, 13 were articles included. The prevalence was 25%, mild cases were predominant, fever, cough, headache, loss of smell, nasal congestion and loss of taste were frequent. Fever and cough were proportionally higher in hospitalized cases, 81% and 68%. Dyspnea (OR = 6.32; 95% CI = 2.8 – 14.3), fever (OR = 3.82; 95% CI = 2.0 – 7.4), and cough (OR = 3.44; 95% CI = 2.0 – 6.0), p < 0.0001, were associated with severe cases. Up to 28% required intensive care and 38% required non-invasive mechanical ventilation. The preexistence of comorbidity increased the chance of hospitalization and death. Severe cases are associated with the risk of death (RR = 4.56; 95% CI = 2.77 - 7.51), p < 0.001. The race/color black, brown, indigenous and residents of poorer regions were risk group. The review made it possible to know the profile of the disease and could help in the elaboration of public policies, in addition to contributing to the current literature in the field of adolescent health.
