SUMMARY:
Introduction: In 2019, a prevalence study of canine visceral leishmaniasis was carried
out in the city of Estrela do Indaiá, with a high prevalence (10.2%). The COVID-19 pandemic
hampered the progress of the work. The present study aims to continue this work. Objectives:
A new serological survey will be carried out after three years of this study, and no intervention
was carried out during this period. Bone marrow puncture from animals positive for Leishmania
will also be carried out, for characterization of the species and quantification of parasitic load
prevalent in dogs in the municipality. Method: A canine serological survey was carried out in
the urban and rural areas of the municipality, following the norms of the MS Visceral
Leishmaniasis Surveillance and Control Manual. Dogs with CVL are those seroreactive by two
immunological diagnostic techniques, Rapid Immunochromatography-TR-DPP® (screening)
and Enzyme Immunoassay (ELISA) (confirmatory). From blood samples of the animals, the
two tests were performed. The sample size of urban dogs was defined according to the canine
sense of anti-rabies vaccination in the municipality. In the rural area, the Baú community was
evaluated, with all domestic dogs analyzed. Bone marrow samples were also collected from all
animals positive for CVL in both tests. Results: Of 316 samples collected in the urban area, 34
(10.8%) were reactive by the DPP® and of these, 20 (6.3%) were confirmed by the ELISA,
defining the prevalence of CVL at 6.3%. Of 20 samples collected in the rural area, 01 (5.0%)
was reactive by the DPP®, being confirmed by the ELISA, defining the prevalence of CVL in
the rural community of Baú at 5.0%. Discussion: Despite the prevalence found by the 2022
survey (6.3%) being lower than that found by the 2019 survey (10.2%), it was guaranteed that
there is no statistically significant difference between the prevalence p≤0.102, according to the
Pearson's chi-square. Conclusion: This fact demonstrates that canine visceral leishmaniasis did
not progress in the city in general, and no control and prevention measures were adopted
between inquiries. puts the city on alert for the disease, so prevention and control measures
must be implemented by the municipality.
