SUMMARY:
This study aimed to evaluate the epidemiological profile of cases of influenza-like illnesses
(ILI) detected in a Brazilian tertiary hospital from January 2020 to May 2021. With the
emergence of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, there was a significant
increase in ILI hospitalizations in various regions of the country, including the state of Minas
Gerais. The choice of this topic was motivated by the relevance and impact of ILIs, particularly
COVID-19, as a significant cause of hospitalization worldwide. The pandemic created an urgent
demand to understand the epidemiological profile of these syndromes, especially in specific
regions such as Minas Gerais, where ILI hospitalizations have increased significantly. By
addressing the epidemiological profile of ILI cases in a Brazilian tertiary hospital, this study
aims to provide relevant information for the management of health services related to
respiratory infections. Understanding patients' demographic characteristics, symptom severity,
associated comorbidities, administered treatments, and clinical outcomes is crucial for guiding
more effective prevention, diagnosis, and clinical management strategies. Additionally, by
utilizing the Influenza Epidemiological Surveillance Information System (SIVEP-Gripe) as a
data source, this study intends to explore the system's capacity to provide valuable information
for public health decision-making in the face of respiratory disease outbreaks. Therefore, the
choice of this topic is justified by the need to obtain a comprehensive understanding of the
epidemiological profile of ILIs, with an emphasis on COVID-19, in order to improve the
management of health services and contribute to an effective response to pandemics and the
protection of population health. Between January 2020 and May 2021, 865 patients were
admitted with ILI to Santa Casa de Formiga, and 181 died due to complications of the disease
(20.1%). A large proportion of ILI patients tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 (37%), with the
majority of deaths being related to the population with COVID-19 (92.3%). The demographic
profile showed that the majority of ILI patients were male (57.1%), Caucasian (62.8%), over
60 years old (58.1%), and had up to a primary education level (35.8%). Cough was the main
symptom reported at the time of admission (68.7%), and over half of the ILI patients had at
least one risk factor for disease complications (55.3%). A minority of hospitalized patients had
not been vaccinated against influenza (71.7%), and only 4.5% used antivirals during ILI
treatment. Regarding hospitalization, a large proportion of patients were admitted to general
wards (80.7%), while a smaller portion required intensive care units (21.2%), with average stays
of 18 and 10 days, respectively. Factors such as gender, age, education level, influenza
vaccination, time delay to hospitalization, and length of stay in the ward/ICU were associated
with higher ILI mortality in this population. Thus, the data presented in this study can assist
health management organizations in planning actions to combat respiratory infections.
