SUMMARY:

Introduction: Given the growth of excess weight in Brazil and the world and the evident participation of psychological and behavioral issues involved in its etiology, this systematic review sought to evaluate the effectiveness of Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) for weight loss and maintenance in overweight and obese adults. Method: Research that addressed the use of CBT for loss and maintenance of body weight in people over 18 years of age, overweight or obese at baseline, (BMI≥ 25 kg/m²) were included and those that evaluated other approaches in isolation were excluded. psychotherapeutic studies in the treatment of obesity, which addressed the use of CBT to treat candidates for bariatric surgery or who have already undergone the procedure, as well as CBT studies in the treatment of overweight and obesity in specific populations and other conditions that could harm weight loss. 2,178 articles were identified, 29 of which were selected for the review. Eight studies have been analyzed so far. Expected results: It is expected that the results of this study can contribute to updating knowledge about the effectiveness of CBT in the treatment of overweight and obese people; also aims to point out the need for more research in the area regarding the effectiveness of CBT in overweight and obesity in real-world environments, with the intervention applied by professionals working in health services, so that more people have access to treatment, especially in the scenario current, in which the Ministry of Health starts to indicate the use of such an approach in public health.
