SUMMARY:

Introduction: Understanding the interconnection between human beings, animals and the
ecosystem, associated with collaboration between different disciplines and knowledge, is the
basis of the concept of One Health. In this context, there is the principle of Responsible Animal
Ownership (GAR), which refers to man's action in providing adequate conditions to maintain
the animal's physical, psychological and behavioral needs. Failure to perform the role of
guardian properly leads to consequences for animals and humans themselves, such as an
increase in the stray dog population, traffic accidents, bites and the spread of zoonoses.
Objectives: Understand the meaning of the guardian/animal relationship and the adoption of
responsible custody by residents of a municipality in the state of Minas Gerais. Justification:
With the COVID-19 pandemic, a zoonotic disease, new reflections have emerged, including
the importance and need to maintain attention with regard to issues involving the animal-
human-environment interface. A better understanding of the meaning of the guardian/animal
relationship and its impacts allows society to better understand the principles of GAR and its
relationship with Public Health, leading to direct and positive repercussions regarding the
prevention of zoonoses and well-being animal. Furthermore, this study may bring important
reflections on the human psyche, through understanding this relationship and its impacts.
Material and methods: In order to meet the proposed objective, we opted for a descriptive,
qualitative research, with a theoretical approach to Social Constructionism and a
methodological approach to Content Analysis by Laurence Bardin. Data were obtained through
semi-structured interviews with 40 tutors. Results: The analysis initially resulted in 13
categories, which were grouped into three main axes: Guardian/animal relationship;
Responsible Animal Guard; Public health and society. Conclusion: A good interaction between
man and his animal brings benefits not only to man, but also to the animal, since the better this
relationship, the greater the recognition of the importance of the GAR principles and the more
they are put into practice. practice. There is a need to reinforce the importance of implementing
educational measures on GAR and its impact on human, animal health and the environment.
New studies are necessary to better understand the mental/emotional aspects involved in the
guardian/animal relationship within medicine.
