SUMMARY:
Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is an infectious respiratory disease caused by
severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). The salivary glands
and oral epithelium have the ACE2 receptor, used by SARS-CoV-2 to attach itself,
making the oral cavity a host for the virus. The objective of the present study was to
evaluate the oral health condition of patients who had COVID-19 in Divinópolis-MG,
and to analyze the relationship between hospitalization during infection, severity of
COVID-19, gender and age of patients with the presence of lesions. oral. The
methodological design was a cross-sectional study with a total of 200 patients, 123 of
whom had severe Covid-19 and 77 who had mild Covid-19. An oral clinical examination
and a questionnaire were carried out. The chi-square test was used as a statistical tool to
evaluate the possible association between the presence of oral lesions and the occurrence
of hospitalizations due to COVID-19, as well as the presence of oral changes and the
severity of the disease. The most common prevalence of oral diseases were Xerostomia
(52.5%), Ulcerative Lesions (16%), Candidiasis (11%) and HSV1 (11%). Xerostomia,
Ulcerative Lesions, White and Erythematous Plaques, Candidiasis and HSV1 have a
statistically significant association (p<0.05) with hospitalization for Covid-19.
Furthermore, the severity of Covid-19 showed a statistically significant association
(p<0.05) with the following comorbidities: Xerostomia, Ulcerative Lesions,
Candidiasis, HSV1, White and Erythematous Plaques, Stomatitis and Vesicobullous
Lesions. Women had higher frequencies of Xerostomia (74.3%) than men (25.7%)
(p<0.05). Ulcerative lesions were more frequent in men (56.2%) than in women (43.8%)
(p<0.05). According to the Mann-Whitney test, there was a statistically significant
difference (p<0.05) between the median ages of patients with and without severe Covid-
19. Patients who had severe Covid-19 had a higher median age (64 years) than those
without manifestation of the aforementioned disease (42 years). Patients who were
hospitalized had a higher median age (64 years) than those who were not hospitalized
(44 years) (p<0.01). The finding of oral lesions in the patients in this study was based
on clinical findings, and not on serological and histochemical tests, which suggests the
importance of these tests for more robust analyses. Finally, it can be concluded that there
was a statistically significant association when comparing: hospitalization, age and
severity of COVID-19 with the presence of oral lesions.
