SUMMARY:
Introduction: In recent decades, the number of people suffering from chronic kidney
disease (CKD), in Brazil and around the world, has increased exponentially. Kidney
deterioration is insidious and progression leads to more severe stages of kidney
disease associated with high morbidity, mortality and economic burden. The preventive
approach to people with non-dialysis CKD based on health literacy (HL) has been
shown to be limited, and may negatively impact the self-management of the disease.
It is believed that recognizing and improving these people's HL could facilitate the
understanding of information, develop skills, support behavior, strengthen social and
professional support, in addition to facilitating effective involvement with the health
system. In this sense, and considering the scarcity of literature in identifying effective
interventions to improve the LS of people with non-dialysis CKD, this research
proposes to develop actions/intervention programs to promote and improve the LS in
people with chronic kidney disease undergoing pre-dialysis treatment. dialysis.
Objective: Develop interventions for health promotion, in response to the health
literacy needs of people with chronic kidney disease undergoing pre-dialysis treatment.
Method: this research will employ mixed methods with a sequential explanatory design
that will be carried out in two distinct phases: quantitative followed by qualitative. It is
noted that this project will rely on quantitative data collected and analyzed during the
doctoral student's master's degree (RIBEIRO et al., 2021), and this will be considered
the first phase. Qualitative data will then be collected in 2024 from a sequential
explanatory follow-up aggregated with the perception of healthcare professionals
(doctors and nurses), in addition to managers. The plan is to explore the experience of
people with CKD included in the first phase of the study understanding and using health
information and services to make assertive decisions regarding your kidney health.
The two phases will be connected in the middle and final stage of the study. Results:
partial results will be presented in article format, in addition to the synthesis of results
and conclusion of the master's thesis (Ribeiro, 2021). The first, published in Revista
Norte Mineira de Enfermagem, in December 2021, will be presented in the written part
of the qualification. It is titled “Functional Health Literacy: Impact on self-care in patients
with non-dialysis kidney disease”. And the second article, which complements the
quantitative part of the project, was published by the Revista da Escola Paulista de
Enfermagem, Acta Paulista, entitled “Functional Health Literacy in chronic kidney
disease patients: a challenge in the preventive approach”, will be presented in both the
written and in the oral presentation of the qualification. The entire qualitative stage will
be carried out in 2024. Partial considerations: In the first article, it was identified that
the higher the LS, the level of education, in addition to a paid job, the greater the
general self-care capacity of patients with non-dialysis CKD. In the second article, there
was a predominance of participants with inadequate functional health literacy. And
although clinical variables did not appear to be predictors of LS scores in the
aforementioned study, it was statistically found that lower LS scores were found in
people with more advanced stages of kidney disease, with lower monthly income and
with less internet use.
