TITLE:

Preference and use of reproductive microhabitat by the species Pithecopus ayeaye (Anura,
Hylidae, Phyllomedusinae)

KEY WORDS:

Melastomataceae, reproductive mode, microhabitat selection, oviposition

PAGES: 10
BIG AREA: Ciências Biológicas
AREA: Ecologia
SUMMARY:

Anurans are the group with the greatest reproductive diversity among tetrapod vertebrates,
using different types of microhabitats for reproduction. Representatives of the Hylidae family
have adaptations that favor occupation for terrestrial life, and the subfamily Phyllomedusinae
are of exclusively terrestrial reproduction. With a wide variation in oviposition sites. The
species
Pithecopus ayeaye of the subfamily Phyllomedusinae reproduce in the arboreal stratum
in hanging leaves under the backwaters formed along temporary streams of the first order of
the rupestrian fields. Considering previous studies that indicate a bigger occurrence of
oviposition on
P. ayeaye on leaves of species of the Melastomataceae family, in this project,
we try to understand if there is a preference of the species
P. ayeaye for leaves of
Melastomataceae and if the leaves used for oviposition have a morphological pattern defined
as leaf area, type of trichome, the density of trichomes and texture (membranous, leathery or
chartaceous), and whether this pattern interferes with egg viability. We will also assess
whether the characteristics of the backwater, such as volume, type of substrate (rock or earth),
and plant diversity interfere with the abundance and viability of nests and whether the distance
from the nest to the water depth and the shore also alter the viability of the nests. To evaluate
the choice for plant and leaf characteristics, we will use a chi-square test for each variable: 1)
is it Melastomataceae or not, 2) is it Melastomaceae or not; 3) has or does not have a high
density of trichomes. Linear regression will be performed to analyze the relationship between
1) backwater volume and nest abundance; 2) plant diversity and abundance of nests. Two-way
ANOVA will analyze the relationship between substrate type and nest abundance. The
spawning viability will be analyzed using the MANOVA analysis relating the following
variables: leaf area, trichome density, leaf height to the water depth, and distance to the bank.
