SUMMARY:

Urban expansion and the constant search for arable areas have
caused an increase in degraded areas Fragmentation and isolation between patches can
reduce the movement of fauna between areas, directly disturbing the reproduction and plant
succession that, in tropical environments, may directly need of interactions with animals.
Among vertebrates, birds are the main seed dispersers. However, studies show that the
existence of openings between fragments can reduce the ability of some birds to return to
their original areas after being structurally transformed into isolated patches. Some species
that live in forests do not have autonomy of flight to overcome altered environments,
needing structures such as perches to rest. In open areas, without the presence of structures
for the birds to perch, the installation of artificial perches is a low-cost technique for the
restoration of degraded areas because they become seed dispersal nuclei and because they
present a high environmental efficiency in targeted restoration. . The present study will be
developed in areas that suffered anthropic action and that are inserted under the domain of
Mata Atlância in the south of Minas Gerais. The main objective of this study is to verify
how the installation of artificial perches can influence seed dispersal by frugivorous birds
in fragmented landscapes. At first, 3 areas will be selected and each area will receive three
artificial perches with seed collection nets and 3 control nets, totaling 18 structures. The
seeds collected in the nets will be counted and identified to the lowest possible taxonomic
level. The use of the perches by the avifauna will be evaluated by direct observations and,
during the observations, a field form will be filled out recording the behavior of the birds
on the perch. Data on temperature, rainfall and seasonal variation will be collected monthly.
For analysis of the collected data, the R software version 4.2.1 (R Development CoreTeam
2020) will be used through the vegan package.
