Effects of the tailings from the Fundão dam failure on the morphological anomalies of the
tadpole assemblage in the Alto Rio Doce
Fluctuating asymmetry, mining, environmental contamination, environmental tragedy
This work aims to evaluate whether the effects of the tailings from the Fundão dam failure
caused morphological anomalies in tadpole assemblage in Alto Rio Doce. To analyze these
effects, the chosen tool was fluctuating asymmetry due to its easy handling and because it is a
developmental homeostasis index that captures the stress suffered within communities in the
face of an environmental impact. The fluctuating asymmetry will be evaluated by marking
morphological points in tadpoles collected from areas affected by the tailing, areas chronically
affected by mining activity, and preserved areas, aiming to answer our hypothesis.
