TITLE:

Distribution pattern of Taenia saginata (Platyhelminthes, Cestoda) in the population of cattle in the micro-region of São João del-Rei, MG.

KEY WORDS:

Bovine cysticercosis, Population ecology, Georeferencing

PAGES: 30
BIG AREA: Ciências Biológicas
AREA: Ecologia
SUMMARY:

The larval forms of Taenia saginata constitute the cysticerci, which are part of
the life cycle of
Taenia sp. The cycle has two hosts, with humans as the definitive hosts and cattle as
the main intermediate hosts. When cattle ingest
T. saginata eggs in the environment, the embryos
break out of the eggs and develop as cysticerci in the tissues of cattle. Information on bovine
cysticercosis, in most cases, comes from veterinary inspection records at slaughterhouses intended
for animal slaughter. The main objective of the project will be to detect the distribution pattern of
Taenia saginata in the bovine population in the micro-region of São João del-Rei, from 2019 to
2021. For that, data obtained from the animal transit guides (GTA) available will be used by the only
slaughterhouses that serves the entire micro-region. In the GTAs, information will be collected such
as the municipality of origin; number of animals transported for slaughter in the slaughterhouse; in
addition to data on the occurrence of cysticercosis from
post-mortem examinations, in the case of
positivity. From the data collected, the prevalence by municipality will be determined. Thus, annual
and monthly prevalences will be obtained in the micro-region of São João del-Rei, MG. Monthly
prevalence data will be used to test whether there is autocorrelation between months. If they present
autocorrelation, elements that shape the behavior of the series (trend, seasonality, stationarity) will
be extracted from the temporal data set. Annual prevalence data will be tested to see if there is any
correlation with environmental factors available from IBGE. The locations (properties) where
positive cases were obtained will be plotted on the micro-region map to determine the spatial
distribution patterns of the parasite in the intermediate host population. At the end of the research, it
is expected that the knowledge generated will support future works that seek to understand more
precisely the distribution of the parasite in the environment, in the population of intermediate hosts
and in the population of definitive hosts. In addition, the analyses have the potential to assist in the
mitigation of impacts related to human health and economic losses in the meat sector arising from
the high prevalence of the parasite.
