SUMMARY:

The right to education in Brazil has gone through setbacks and advances since the Imperial Constitution of 1824, being recognized as a social right only in 1988. And, in the sphere of basic education, secondary education has undergone several discussions regarding its purpose, given the dichotomy between preparation for entry into higher education or the job market. In 1996, secondary education had its identity recognized with the promulgation of the National Education Guidelines and Bases Law (Law nº 9,394/96). In this context, the Federal Institutes of Education, Science and Technology were created as a public educational policy in order to overcome this opposition, approaching basic education and professional training in an integrated way, without valuing one to the detriment of the other. Thus, the objective of this work is to analyze the reasons and expectations of the student body for entering Integrated High School at the Instituto Federal Sudeste MG campus São João del-Rei. The methodology will have a predominantly qualitative approach, using secondary data in a subsidiary manner – obtained through bibliographic and documentary research – and primary data to be collected through a questionnaire. The questionnaires will be applied to all students and graduates of the Integrated High School courses at IF Sudeste MG – São João del-Rei campus, estimating a population of 300 students and graduates. At the end of this work, it is expected to: understand whether the student body's objectives are aligned with the public policy of Integrated High School, as well as with institutional objectives; identify the scope of the course pedagogical projects (PPC) of this object of study; map the profile of students in this object of study; provide information that can assist São João del-Rei campus managers in institutional decisions
