SUMMARY:

This work investigated the possibility of registering a Geographical Indication (GI) for soapstone in the region of Ouro Preto, in the state of Minas Gerais. A conceptualization of industrial property was made, its influence on the development of the region, which is recognized, and a survey on which laws and bodies are competent to grant a GI. Through studies on the traditionality, quality and typicality of soapstone, data were collected that would reflect the potential of the region to become a GI. It is also intended to carry out a field research and finally confront the collected data to verify the viability and obstacles for the registration of an indication of origin or a denomination of origin
