SUMMARY:

The Geographical Indication (GI) is one of the forms of protection, within the scope of industrial property, for products or services that originate from a certain location, and can occur in two different ways: “Denominação de Origem” (DO) or “Indicação de Procedência”(IP). The municipality of Coronel Xavier Chaves, located in Minas Gerais, has had, since 1983, an association of women artisans who produce Abrolhos Lace, with the purpose of generating income, valuing the participants and preserving the tradition and way of doing things. The objective of this work is to analyze the possibility of obtaining a GI registration with the National Institute of Industrial Property - INPI, for the Renda de Abrolhos the municipality of Coronel Xavier Chaves, considering some requirements of current legislation. Research is being carried out with a qualitative approach, of an applied nature, with bibliographic and documental research and action research as technical and methodological procedures. As for the objectives, they are classified as descriptive and exploratory. Studies carried out so far indicate evidence for the possibility of requesting GI registration with INPI, in modality of IP (Indicação de Procedência), considering the main requirements of current legislation. It is expected to prepare a conclusive report about the availability of requesting a GI registration to be presented to the artisans' association and to the municipal government.
