The geographical indication (GI) is a legal institute for the protection of products and/or services that have differentiated qualities resulting from the originating geographic environment and have the potential to generate many benefits, encouraging local development. The pewter handcrafts of São João del Rei is recognized as an expression of the identity and culture of the city. This research seeks to analyze the perceptions of artisans about the results of the registration of the first indication of origin (IO) of São João del Rei, in the ten years after the registration of IG 201010 - São João del Rei for handicrafts pieces in pewter, in order to understand the impact of this GI for the Municipality of São João del Rei. To this end, a qualitative research of a descriptive nature will be carried out, applied in the form of a case study strategy, with the Association of pewter Piece Craftsmen of São João del Rei - AAPE and the companies that can use the seal of indication of origin as the research unit. Data collection will be conducted through bibliographic and documentary research, interviews, and questionnaires to understand the perception of pewter artisans about the benefits and shortcomings in the use of the Indication of origin seal. It is expected that this project will generate a diagnosis of the perceived benefits and shortcomings by the entrepreneurs benefited with the registration of the seal IG 201010 - São João del Rei for handicrafts pieces in pewter.
