SUMMARY:

The quest for recognition by obtaining the Geographical Indication (GI) seal has become an important factor in territorial development strategies, as well as an important tool in promoting economic development, which, from one location, extends to other neighboring locations and other activities in a region. The aim of this recognition is to leverage and boost activities in small towns and/or develop products with the aim of increasing production or strengthening an increasingly competitive market. Given the growing number of GI registrations in Brazil, the challenge is to know how much these recognitions impact on the lives of these communities and the importance they can represent for people. With this in mind, the purpose of this study is to propose the creation of a socio-economic database before and after the registration of the Geographical Indication of Resende Costa - MG, from the following sources: SEBRAE, CAGED, IBGE, the town hall and the producers' association, in order to provide information for evaluating geographical indicators. To this end, we carried out qualitative research of an applied nature and a case study of the Resende Costa GI, which was chosen because the GI is in its first year of existence and it is therefore still possible to have access to relevant information before and after the year in which the GI was introduced.
