SUMMARY:

With the advances achieved by social movements, social participation in urban and regional planning constitutes an important tool to minimize socio-spatial inequalities intensified by technocratic rationality. Despite participation being an important advance to balance the differences in power of urban actors, there are parts of society that still remain invisible, as is the case of citizens of childhood age. From the intersection between the need to transform urban planning and the recognition of children as social actors, an agenda for research and political actions around the world emerges, which seeks to recognize children as social and political actors. After the International Conference for the Rights of Children and Adolescents (1989), there were several efforts to encourage the transformation of urban space with the participation of children, in particular the “Child Friendly Cities” program by UNICEF and “La Cittá dei Bambini ” by pedagogue Francesco Tonucci. Both programs encourage in their guidelines children's social participation, the creation of adequate public spaces and the creation of public policies for child protection and participation. In this context, this dissertation project takes shape and its main objective is to investigate children's social participation in cities certified as "child friendly" in Brazil.
