SUMMARY:

Medicalization is a phenomenon concerning to how some normal aspects of the everyday life is appropriated by medicine. In more detail, medicalization is related to the process by which the medical knowledge acquires power to interfere in the construction of concepts, customs and social behaviors; after all, being healthy is a necessary condition for the world of capital and work. Due to the health crisis generated by the COVID-19 pandemic (Corona Virus Disease 2019), the phenomenon of medicalization was enhanced; as a result, the power of medical knowledge has been extended to almost every aspect of life in society, resulting in countless changes in the daily lives of millions of people around the globe. In order to contribute to a better understanding of the expansion of medical power promoted by this new scenario, the present work seeks to answer three main questions: reviewing the approaches of some the main scholars on the subject, namely Michel Foucault, Ivan Illich and Peter Conrad, among others, the first question to be addressed is to try to clarify how the term medicalization has been understood in contemporary practice. The second question to be answered is to elucidate how society started to legitimize the performance of medicine beyond its traditional spectrum of action, for this we will present some of the main studies of the thinker Michel Foucault, carried out in the 1970s, on the escalation of development of medical and health services in European societies over the last few centuries. Finally, the third question is what the obstacles that the so-called risk society imposes on medicalization processes, recovering the theoretical framework proposed by Ulrich Beck.
