SUMMARY:

Evolutionary Psychology (EP) emerges at the end of the 20th century as one of the candidates to fulfill Charles Darwin's dream of extending the concepts of the Theory of Evolution to the study of Human Nature. According to EP, the human mind is an adaptation. The mind present in the skulls of modern humans would be the result of evolutionary pressures found in the Environment of Evolutionary Adaptive (EEA). This central idea of EP can be symbolized by the following sentence by Leda Cosmides and John Tooby: “Our modern skulls harbor a stone-age mind” (Cosmides and Tooby 1997, p. 90)”. Defenders of EP propose that the psychological mechanisms of modern humans are a legacy of the psychological mechanisms of our ancestors. However, Evolutionary Psychology is far from being unanimous. In 2019, the philosopher Subrena Smith published an article entitled: Is Evolutionary Psychology Possible?. In this article, Subrena accuses evolutionary psychologists of forcing inferences about our species' evolutionary past. According to his view, Evolutionary Psychology would suffer from a methodological problem that cannot be solved. She calls this problem the matching problem. Generally speaking, her criticism of this model of understanding the human mind is directed at attempts to correlate the mind of modern humans with the mind of primitive humans. For Subrena Smith, the correlations intended by Evolutionary Psychology theorists would be mere speculations. The matching problem, according to Subrena, poses a methodological challenge to Evolutionary Psychology. The challenge would be to demonstrate the correlations that are supposed to exist between modern psychological mechanisms and those of our ancestors. For Subrena, "Unless the challenge can be overcome, evolutionary psychological explanations fail." The main purpose of this qualification is to improve the exposure of the Matching Problem in relation to the initial project and present the first hypotheses listed for its resolution.
