The Role of Ekphrasis in the Representation of the Biafra War and the Understanding of the Post-Colonial Subject in 'Half of a Yellow Sun' by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.
Keywords: Subject. Postcolonial. Intermediality. Ekphrasis
Given the relevance of literature in the investigation and understanding of historical facts and social aspects, this master’s thesis discusses the role of the post-colonial subject in a society marked by the impositions of colonization and a conflictual post-independence, as occurred in Nigeria that, seven years after proclaiming itself independent, faced a great civil conflict. Having as its object the novel Half of a Yellow Sun, by Nigerian writer Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, we intend to investigate and discuss the identity of the aforementioned subject, based on the studies of intermediality, more precisely on the notion of ekphrasis, a media phenomenon that gives vividness to the text. By detailing objects and images from Nigerian culture, Adichie's novel proposes a humanized vision of the civil war, granting voice to the victims of the conflict and Nigerian society, reacting to the generalization and erasure of post-colonial narratives.
